My first catch in Florida, all of 5" long. Caught him on a yellow jig. Feisty! Appears to be one of these. Saw lots of bigger fish finning the surface, some hits but no takers.
Try a gold spoon when you see finning fish. Reds are known to fin like crazy (I've heard stories of them being stacked like cord wood) , they like a gold spoon. Good luck
So, you take him while he’s still feisty, run a big hook sideways through his back, towards the tail end a bit, and then toss him out under a big bobber. Crack a beer, and relax. That’s how you fish in the afternoons around here.
Just so you know, that isn’t legal to do everywhere. In MN it is illegal to use a game fish as bait. We mostly buy sucker minnows for “nap fishing”. Bigger the minnow, the bigger the prize, but also the less likely to get hit.
Is a "sucker minnow" similar to a prankster blowing up rubber ducks and putting them into the water for duck hunters? ("I GOT ONE! -ssssssssssssssss)
Found a magic spot today for atomic sunfish, three eating sized ones in a row but tossed them back. Soon as the spinner hit the water they nailed it. And another snook, this one 7".
I’ve caught many keychain fish. Spent an entire weekend on the water at lake of the ozarks without a single bite, or even the one that got away.
We have a big problem with Asian carp. Not much around here can compete with them or eat them other than the alligator gar. That’s why it’s such a shame that so many people who accidentally catch a gar toss them on shore since they eat game fish also.
Don't tell anybody but I haven't got my fishing license yet but when I do, and since the backwater here checks out as clean, I'm going to get me a cheap bag of pretzels for breading and go to town on these boys because... https://www.reef2rainforest.com/2016/04/01/florida-issues-call-for-anglers-to-target-exotics/
