Do you like shave sticks? How many do you have and what are your favourites? I like them, I seldom use it, but that is about to change. The ones I have are these: Erasmic Old Stick – A Pretty good stick with a nice scent and a decent lather Irisch Moos – A lovely stick with an interesting scent and excellent lather Tabac – A decent performer, but I do not care for the smell. Derby - Smells like Arko, but performance is not that good. Not my first choice. Camelot Original – My favourite with an intriguing scent and top notch performance. Camelot Newer – Smells like Arko, just not worse ( I think) and burns my face. Performance is good. D.R Harris – Lovely stick with top notch performance. I used this on two trips this summer. One in May and one in July. And this stick managed to wring out a whopping nine shaves out of a green Astra blade. It could probably do another shave or two, but my trip ended Palmolive – A great stick with a good scent and great performance La Toja - A legend in its own right. Have a wonderful clean smell and a rich lather. A legend on par with the mighty Arko GZD Berber – I do not remember, but I think it works and smells like Derby On my wish list are Ogallala, Wilkinson Sword and Speick.
I've never used one, so I've no real opinion to offer on them. I do have a Palmolive stick somewhere that I can try.
I love the performance of Palmolive and Arko but hate the sensation of rubbing the stick on my face so I grate them into a Ziploc container.
I have a few and I like them. That is, most of them. Like & use a lot: Palmolive Tabac De Vergulde hand Arko Don't care much (can't get it to lather properly, perhaps it's the water, I don't know) Erasmic Not used yet so no opinion on them all other sticks
Palmolive is the only one I have tried. I really like the soap, but don't like sticks, so I mushed it up and use it like a "regular" soap.
I have a LaToja and a Harris lavender. They both are wonderful, the Harris delivering the same great lavender as their soaps. Terrific for traveling - small, self contained and no mess. I also use them at home on occasion, although not in the regular rotation, not sure why not. They are inexpensive and worth a try if you haven't.
I have Arko and Palmolive stick. I like both, both scent and performance wise. But I need to work on lathering Arko a bit better =)
I like them too. I use them mostly for traveling but I did go through a half stick of Arko at home a little while back. I'm getting ready to go on a little trip and a Palmolive stick will be going along with me. I've also got a new Wilkinson Sword stick that might go too since there's not much left of the Palmolive.
I usually keep one or two shave sticks around for traveling, the others I tend to smoosh or grate into a mug or something. My favorite shave stick is La Toja, I've gone though a couple of them already. My least favorite was the re-re-formulation Erasmic, it was crumbly and I couldn't get it to lather for the life of me.
Here are the ones I have. 1. Mike's Barbershop. 2. Palmolive. 3. Arko. 4. DVH. 5. Irisch Moos. I should revisit them.
The new Erasmic stick is absolutely horrendous. It smells great but it is not usable at all. I get a lather out of it, but it only lasts for seven seconds. I have an Arko stick myself, but like so many of you I have turned it into a bowl soap and more or less forgotten all about it
I love sticks. I like to mill soap bars and press them into stick containers. Vintage Williams, Stirling, Mike's, HTGAM, Cold River, etc. Loading directly on your face can cure lots of lather problems.
I like the idea of a using a stick and face lathering more than the actual practice. I never have found joy in face lathering. That said Arko is my goto shave soap now-a-days. As several people above have said, I grate, then mash my Arko into a small Ziploc bowl for storage and then bowl lather with it. I use a SS bowl off of ebay the same dimensions as a VDH ceramic bowl..
And I have problems with lather when I try to face lather. Bowl lathering cures those problems. Just sayin' It's your shave. Enjoy it your way.
