I never see anyone using Mama Bear Soap in SOTD. Why?

    Actually, what you said was:
Were you really expecting insults to get a warm reception?

Ha, what insult. Is this a discussion about bases or defending the honor of a friend.

I'm sure the proprietor is a great lady. She was a founding member. I get it.

Doesn't change the fact that a glycerin soap with frag dumped into it just isn't a good choice with so many better bases out there.

There's a reason we use electricity over candles........times change and if you don't evolve you get left behind.

That was Tim's @Tim Spencer original supposition. It has been and continues to be a SOTD soap for a shrinking group of shavers. Making $100 tubs of exotic ingredient products doesn't reduce the quality or usefulness of an existing brand. Some folks are out in front chasing the dream of The Next Big Thing. Many follow as the products prove their worth or flash in the pan disappear. Behind the mob are the stalwarts and sticks in the mud who have found what they like and have no urge to try every newfangled fad. As a dabbler I enjoy Vintage Williams & Colgate soaps. Modern Palmolive shave stick is good and cheap if utilitarian. My growing collection of Stirling sheep tallow soaps have proven their worth. Mystic Water, Soap Commander, Route 66, Ginger's Garden all have had high points in STOD coverage. Doesn't reduce their quality if The New Guy is currently on top.
Not for you? Glad you've found a better product! Post your SOTD proudly! Do give reviews and let us know why it's better. For many a label or ceramic tub is just the container seen in a photo. A glowing review might pull our interest. Seeing many of our fellow shavers using the same product could open our wallets. But it's still our choice.

And then there are the light bulbs with bluetooth speakers built in. I'm not out of my mind just because all I want from a bulb is light.

Excellent! Lol. I have Mama Bears Bay rum. The only Bay rum I have. I use it from time to time. It lathers well for me. My face has no problem at all with it. And I love the smell. The reason it doesn’t see as many uses isn’t because of quality, it is because if quantity. I have so many soaps it takes awhile to get around to it, and I don’t have much of it left. Call me a hoarder..

It should be noted that in the first 6-7 SOTD photos I looked at this morning, there was Mama Bear's, Speick, TSD, Fine, and RazoRock soaps. So, this idea that TSD is too "snooty" to post anything but Sebum Gold and its ilk is poppycock.

I tried Mama Bears several years ago and it gave me a face burn like no other soap i've used. Apparently, it was common enough with her soaps she had a page warning users to beware of possible irritation.

It did perform well and the scent was decent, so I understand why it was once popular to those who didn't have a reaction.

I use mama Bears on and off regularly. My Favorites are Aged Spice And Barbershop.

    Great post.
Some of those vegetable-based soaps around for generations, SV, MdC and TFS to name a few, to my mind, still out perform the newer soaps with long lists of exotic ingredients. I prefer those older soaps just on the basis of performance and I don't think I'm crazy (though my wife may have a differing opinion).

The older stuff had all the kinks worked out. Sometimes the new products try too hard. Doesn't make them all bad new or old! A matter of preference?

True, but we have also gained a lot of soapers, and also have more factory-produced soaps available. It is a far cry from the days of Mama Bear, Em's Place or Col. Conk being the only affordable options. Even then, Col. Conk could be hard to find.

I always avoided Mama Bear soaps because of the link with Badger & Blade (and also other "promoted" brands). Saying anything there ca. 2007 favoring other soapmakers or products not from the chosen few vendors and Wham! instant censorship or banning. I took that as an indication there were problems, and did not like the cajoling and censorship. I bailed from B&B and eventually came here.

Can't say I avoided Mama Bear's when I first got started. I'll agree on a couple points though. While the availability of shave soap at retail big box stores has increased, the quality of locally available "homemade" soaps from small kitchen soap companies hadn't impressed me early on. Like many New Shavers I got caught up by the knowledgeable Members and deep database of B&B. Not knowing how they had sold their Corporate soul to sponsors I expressed my Newbie opinion. Standard Wham/Bam! bannination just when I needed help & guidance the most. Two other shave forums didn't satisfy like the fast paced Joe Everybody feel of B&B. TSN was and may still be a haven for high end gear owners. My gear has reached the point where I could proudly post a SOTD there. The old SRP served me for a while but they concentrated on the SR part as was their choice. Fortunately I did find the Style Chooser button (lower left corner) here at TSD. That let my sufficiently color blind eyes efficiently read the website. So along the way I did pick up an over priced puck of Col. Conk from the shave shop at a casino here in my town. Haven't used it up in the years I've been wet shaving though I find the glycerin formula makes a dandy preshave soap. Never finished off either puck of VDH either. Now that I think about it my soap acquisition has out paced my use such that I've yet to finish off anything. That's why my style of den stocking is called a disorder.

My post was meant to be facetious. I use everyday, run of the mill products all the time. I don't post SOTD photos because believe it or not.......wait for it............I don't own a cell phone. Also don't have a digital camera. And I'm proud to say I've never taken a "selfie". Pouty lipped or otherwise. I wasn't attempting to disparage anyone here at all. I like this forum, and am no longer a member of the big one. I don't even lurk there. This place seems to have alot more regular everyday folks, and lacks the exclusive "haughty" attitude that I have found elsewhere. Cheers and happy shaving.
