I pick this up for a song and a dance, I was told it dates from the early 70's... The bottle is heavy glass, it reads "Merry Christmas, From your Barber" on the back and "A Gift from your Barber" on the front. The fragrance is still there, actually stronger, more robust than current offerings. Just thought it was interesting. It decorates my den, not for use.
I agree with @david of central florida ... Is it just the regular Clubman or some other scent, like Lilac Vegetol? You mention it smells more potent than newer aftershave. Is it basically the same scent though? I wonder if it changed over the years... like Coca-Cola. The formula changed 13 times before "New Coke" came out in 1985, but people didn't realize it was reformulated over the years. "Classic Coke" isn't the same stuff that was sold in 1886, when it had cocaine in it. (I worked for 30 years for Coca-Cola, so I know).
Yes, it's basically the same scent but stronger, or at least some notes are more pronounced. I'm actually a fan of the Clubman scent although I know it smells like old man to some. But then, to some I am an old man.
I'll be 55 in less than 3 weeks. Maybe I'm old enough to be considered an old man. I do know I love the smell of Clubman. I wear it to please me more than to please anyone else.
I just bought a bottle at the Christmas Tree Store for $7.95. Comes in a plastic bottle now. Having heard that it was used by some of the "Rat Pack", I was curious so, I opened it in the store to take a whiff and it instantly reminded me of my youth, when the only place to get a haircut was at the barbershop. They always finished with hot lather from that machine and by using the straight razor around the back, ears and side burns. Then a splash of Clubman. So, I had to have it. When I got home, I put some on my wrist and I could smell it for hours, I mean HOURS, unlike other aftershaves and balms that hardly last until I get downstairs after shaving. I always try out new things on my kids which usually gets a "smells like old man", as this one did. But, old man is not necessarily a bad thing, some they like and some they don't. They just think it's an old world scent, not modern. Would they wear an "old man" scent, no way! But, I have recently been elevated from "old man" to "Grumpy Old Man" by my kids and, proud of it.
I love my all my Clubman scents!! Original, Virgin Island Bay Rum and yes THE VEG!!!! I decant them to various glass bottles. Wish I could get a hold of a Clubman original glass bottle or three. I've yet to try the Vanilla, but I've heard good things about it...
A couple of months ago, I bought a bottle of original Clubman @ the local Walgreens. I think it was $5.99. It's the first alcohol based aftershave I've used in over 30 years. I like the smell very much, and it seems to help soothe the mug pretty well too. I'm planning to stay with it.
For what it's worth I am 39 and love this stuff and so does my wife. As far as 55 being old.... You are only as old as you let yourself be!
I don't want to jack the thread but when I was a kid in the '70s, I recall that Coke (and RC for that matter) had almost a burning but quite refreshing feel as it went down that no cola has today. Pepsi, I dunno cuz Mom never liked it so we never drank it. Am I imagining things? Are they the same now and I'm just used to it?
I love Clubman, and that bottle's a great find. Hope you at least broke a sweat during the song and dance That bottle really harkens back to a different time. In my mind I'm picturing a a barbershop on Chrismas Eve, filled with men half in the bag on real eggnog waiting for their last minute holiday haircuts.
That is a cool find!! I dig any old memorabilia, I wish I had some of my Granddad's shaving gear. He was a class act who always wore a fedora, a pocket watch and had all of the traditional shaving implements.
I just got the Vanilla and it smells very much like the original but less sweet maybe more earthy or whatever those Super Noses call it. Not sure if I smell any vanilla but, I LIKE it. Maybe more than the original.
