I have a love for travel, and that unfortunately is my solitary reason to do it. I have no need to for business, family, or anything else, except that I love to travel. Whether by plane or car, both have their pros and cons, but I really love the good old American road trip. So sometimes I just hop in the car and go somewhere hundreds of miles away. For no reason at all except because I wanna. So my question for you is this, and please, if you read this, respond and be completely honest. I'm planning a trip around Texas (which is a huge state, in case you didn't know) next month, and I'm thinking of writing a blog about it. I'm talking trip details including the mundane to the mildly interesting ... and no guarantees beyond that. Are you interested in reading it? I don't really like writing just for myself--I lack the motivation to put in the work if no one will be reading it but me. But I would be VERY interested if someone else was doing that, because it's my cup of tea. If I write a blog about my road tripping experiences (which I can assure you won't include any Jules Verne-esque journeys to the center of the earth or 20,000 leagues under the sea or anything at all except "today I saw a mountain, and filled up my tank in Abilene, and I listened to The Tommyknockers on my iPhone," only it'll be a little more decorated than that), I honestly have no idea if anyone cares. Tell me.
I did that once on a drive from Houston to Los Angeles. It's amazing the number of things that you will see and put in your journal. Stuff that you might not have paid any attention to before. I sometimes read it again and it's as fresh as when it was written. One thing that might have improved the effort would have been to have a micro recorder so I could easily dictate stuff while driving. I usually updated my journal at days end, while sitting in my room and sipping a beer but I think I forgot a lot. Had I of had a recorder I could have transcribed it easily. And hell yes, I will read it !!
I personally wouldn't read it, but see it being a huge benefit for yourself and family. All the things you might forget in years to come, would be all documented. I'd say go for it...you already have a few confirmed "I'd Reads" above, and if you add your family and friends to the list, you got a success.
I will read it. When you get to Houston stop at James Coney Island and order a "Jumbo Chicago Style All The Way" and a Delaware Punch. Make sure that is in the blog! Also - you must have ice cream at a Braums location if you can find one.
Braums! I must get to Oklahoma STAT, I have been Braum's deficient for a couple years now. When you stop in at Braums, you must write in detail about the experience. I will live vicariously through your enjoyment of the ice cream.
Texas. Summer. Outside. Bad. We travel in the summer also. We hit the Colorado Rockies for a few weeks to dodge the heat. Course, this year, I get postcards from my own family.
I'm not going through Houston. My route will be down 35 out of Dallas through Austin, then San Antonio. After that I'll hit I10 and head west, then cut down to Hwy 90 at some point and end up in Alpine, TX. We have Braums here in my area. I've been going there all my life. It is really good. Should you and BabyGirl ever find yourself in the Dallas/Fort Worth area you need to call me up and I'll take you there.
Sounds like fun. I know how you feel about traveling. It's nothing for my wife and I to drive three or four hours out, find a place for lunch, then drive the three or four hours back home. For us it's about the time spent together, not so much the destination. Would I read your blog? I'm sure I would peek in every now and again. Have fun!
Make sure your cell phone is charged when your out that way, they've taken all of the pay phones out of the rest stops but you do have free wi-fi there now. I used to travel all over TX and the rest of the South West, I wish I hadn't alwas had a load so I could have stopped and seen some of the sights. Remember to becareful in the border towns, some areas are not what you'd call safe for the family. I hope you enjoy your travels and be sure to add some photos to your story.
