So, day off, not a lot to do... out I go.. do a bit of this and a bit of that... on the way home I tell myself it is time to go visit the local antique shops for razors... one by one nothing but disappointment... finally one place suggests a store that is anything but antiques... more junk collections... you know, garage sale gone into full time business! so off I go, wander in.. and ask, "Do you have any old razors?" "in the ladies room!" the attendant says "pardon?" I reply He points, and repeats, "in the ladies room" So I head off the Ladies room... um.. open the door, turn on the light.. and this is what I came home with.... Gillette NEW long tooth comb, 1971 Unique looking Super Speed, 2 Slim's 1962 & 1965, Black handle Super Speed 1976 and lastly an Old In a case. all for $9.23 Sadly the Old's handle is cracked... oh well! :signs131 Still, not a bad haul for $9.23 and in case you are wondering, I cleaned out the stock!
Very nice! Unfortunately cracks on that style handle are very common, and I have read of them being repaired with epoxy. The blue handled one is a Lady Gillette, they came in several colors and make great shavers, even for men.
I'm going to cut my loss ($5) on the Old, not only is the handle crackled, but the combs are seriously worn down... Do not want to trash it... but I think that is where it is going to end up pretty soon! Since I took the pic I've been cleaning them... they all cleaned up very well, especially The NEW. The Lady Gillette has some corrosion on the inside of the head. The Black SS could pass for new. The Slim's are going to go visit my jeweler friend for a little more cleaning.... think they will be for sale as I already have a very nice Slim. This is turning into a hobby... damn... and here I thought turning to DE shaving was going to save me money! :happy097
Yeah.. that was what we all kept trying to tell ourselves. At least now that I have over 50 razors for the 4th time, I have stopped buying them... for now.... Great grab! I wouldn't trash the old. If you get to that point offer it up for the cost of shipping. Somebody can use it. I would like to see a pic of worn down combs. I haven't seen that before. They look like maybe someone filed them down to match the length of the cap.. very odd.. Might make a dangerously aggressive razor. So maybe don't give it to somebody who doesn't know what they are doing.
Wow, never seen anything like that on an Old Type before. :think002 If someone had tried to file it down, they sure didn't keep it even.
Figured as much! Now to the phrase I see hear all too often... "make great shavers" Has Gillette even made a DE razor that didn't shave great? :think002
Imagine my surprise! Now I think everybody will understand why I think this should head for the trash!
Short answer, all of them! Like everything in our little hobby, it is YMMV. I've seen many members swear by Gillette's and I've seen many swear at Gillette's. I guess a better choice of words would have been, even though it was marketed for women, many men use them in their rotation too.
Yup, bottom plate can head to the trash! However, the blade holder, cap, and handle can still be used by someone who needs replacement parts. I can only guess why someone would do that to the combs. About 6 months or so ago someone had one were the combs were completely removed from only 1 side of the head and the other side was fine.
