Hi, My brother sent me some pictures of a “straight razor “ he had seen for £20 asking if I could help with identifying it before buying it. I’ve never seen anything like it before ♂️ is it a fixed blade shavette or a straight razor ?? Or something in between I’m sure it’s a Ford Medley Sheffield and have found some info on them but all their razors either in the flesh or old adverts like every other razor are the usual straight format. Has anyone seen one of these or had on or any information please. Sorry pictures are not the best Gra
It is a frame back razor that you can change blades. Some kind of predecessor to the Shavette. Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk
It is a Frameback. Some can change blades, usually the French ones, and some are fixed. When honed, tape the spine, they are usually made of soft metal.
Not mine. But a good example of this style of razor. And yes, these represent the first steps towards the modern shavette style razors, though the blades were intended to be stropped before use. I don't know if they were meant to be honed.
Probably you would have changed the blades at the store where you bought it at the time when they was “new”. And I wonder how many gents that actually honed their razors, most likely they went to the grinder when the stropping didn’t work. Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk
Hi all, Many thanks for all the information and pictures, it’s a totally new one on me. I’ve passed the info onto my brother and I think he is going to buy it if only out of curiosity so it looks like I will hopefully get to see it. Interesting there are 2 variants fixed or removable blade. So i wonder is it possible then to hone the removable blade in the frame ? many thanks Gra
Yes, that is how they are honed. Make sure you use tape on the spine. Can you post a pic of the front(toe end) of the razor. To see if there is a screw in there??
I’ve just seen a short thread on here from 2013 and a couple on sale on Esty for around the £100 plus mark so 20 quid for this one so it seems to be a bargain and I have learnt something new! thanks for all your help Gra
Sound advice and I must admit it’s not something I had ever considered before. Now today when shaving couldn’t stop thinking about it!! Ha ha Gra
