Sorry I can't be of any help here, but I'll bump this up in case someone with the answers missed this post.

Are you sure that needs "cleaning up"? My eyes aren't so good, and I have never seen a Japanese straight with that textured look, but it doesn't look unnatural to the blade.

There are some guys around with a good bit of knowledge on these straights. Hopefully, they'll check in soon. :)

I would suggest that you contact Michael (over5feet) who is a member here. I know he has someone that does honing and razor work for him and he is in England and I think his guy is as well.

I always would recommend contacting Glen GSSIXGUN here as his work is always top notch and a real gentleman to boot.

    I hope that helps.

  6. Looks like a great find. I agree with Queen that it looks clean.

I'm not an expert by any measure, but it looks to me like the spotting is intentional. It seems to me that if the spotting occurred post-manufacture, it would be present throughout the bevel. Again, not an expert. I've never even shaved with a straight.

My concern would be more the spine wear and size of the bevel, but that can be overcome to make it shave...

Sharpening Kamisori style razors is different then westerns...
Couple of contact names in the UK to start with

    Steve Dempsey at http://www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk/

Neil Miller at SRP or his website http://www.strop-shop.co.uk/

Both are top notch razor guys and both can hone a lick, whether they do Kamisoris or not, I do not know for sure, but that is who comes to mind over on your Island

Klaus aka MovieManiac right here on TSD is in EU so he would be the next to contact...

Me I do them, but shipping is stupid expensive to Idaho

    Hey Tazzbaby,

I really love the look of your Japanese razor. The micro pits really make it look good. Where did you get it? And how much was it if you don't mind me asking? I was thinking of getting one even if I never use it, it is just so nice looking. Looks like it came from the time of Feudal Japan. That in my opinion was the peak of their bladesmithing.

So have had my curiosity peaked by this tread on Tazzbaby's Japanese blade. It would seem many of them have a much more rustic look then what we typically think of as the foldable straight razors. Is that the norm?

Also, it is hard to see from the pics, but they seem to favor a side for their blade. They are only honed on one side? Is this the norm?

JimR, a member here, should be able to tell you. As I understand it, he is the resident expert on all things kamisori. His blog, Eastern Smooth, is an interesting read and an excellent resource.

It really depends on the condition. Some razors will look as refined as a custom Western razor.

You hone both sides but the technique used isn't the same for all people. Some people hone one side more than the other, which is the traditional way to hone them. Some people hone each side equally.
