    Hi,

I got a Merkur 34 G in the mail yesterday, I used it last night (I'm generally an evening shaver) and recieved a fantastic first shave with it. My question about it may be a little silly, but here goes... Is the plating on the razor actual gold, or is it merely a gold colored plating? If the latter, what type of metal is it?

Good to hear you are enjoying the new razor...can't help with the questions about plating though...

The price different between the gold and chrome is about $12.00. I cannot say for certain, but I do not think it is actually real gold. My thoughts are that the gold color is created in the anodizing process itself, based on the specific chemicals used.

Not sure either, but the $12 price difference wouldn't be out of line for real 10k plating... it's not very thick, therefore not that expensive.

    Hi,

I've sent out an email to one of the Merkur reps. If I receive a reply I'll post it. It's not a big deal. I want to know more for the purposes of care, to keep the finish from wearing off as I've read that the gold plating can be a bit sensitive.

Meh, finish, schminish; as long as the shaves are great, nothing else matters. Bag it and tag it. ;)

    Jeff,
I agree for the most part, however if I can keep it looking it as spiffy 30-40-50 years down the road as it does now, why not? That's why I got the 34G and not the 34C:)
I've got to say though... I can't shake this case of RAD. I'm eyeing up the Merkur classic open comb, and plan on buying it before the month is out.
