Barber hones are very hard. Unless it's obviously dished, it probably doesn't need to be lapped. However, if you want to lap it, all you need is a flat surface such as a stone countertop, or a square of plate glass (I do my lapping on a glass coffee table). Buy a few sheets of wet/dry abrasive paper about 200-600 grit. Wet the surface of the counter or table and the abrasive paper will stick to it. Also pour some water on top of the abrasive paper. Draw a grid on the stone with pencil and then work it on the abrasive paper in circles until the grid is gone, and you're done.
Barber hone lapping. Thanks again chimensch for quick info sound,s straight forward and if got a marble slab, and wet dry sandpaper so will get going and hoping i will ,make a good job of it thank,s again.
It might take a while to get it flat but keep at it. I have a Velvet Edge and it's a great little hone that does a wonderful job. It's worth the effort to clean it up and get it in serviceable condition. Enjoy!
I've got a Swaty that is in good shape, but I'm positive it's never been lapped. It was a flea market special, and I'm glad to have it. I'm more than halfway to getting it flat, I'm using 220 wet or dry sandpaper, but let me tell you, it takes a very very very long time to get it flat, but I'm certain it'll be worth it when it is finished.
barber,s hone lapping. well i got the wet and dry sandpaper 240 and 600 a few shit,s of each and did the grid line,s with the pencil and i put the paper on marble and got to work on my velvet edge with round circles and plenty of water took some time but all the penil line,s diapeard and the hone is like a babys bum really nice and smooth i dont think it neaded a lot of work as it was in good order it was very gruby ,but got a tip from a member and oven cleaner sorted that out , cant weight to do my razor touch ups now and i can keep the razor going a bit longer befor it has got to go to the hone mister i have not got that far as to hone my self yet well thank,s for all the help guys mutch apriciated.:
If your razor is in good shape to start with and doesn't get damaged somehow, the barbers hone is all you will ever need. Good shaving!
