I've gotten pretty good at whipping up a good consistency with a variety of TOBS creams but when I apply it to my face, it seems rather thin and it's hard to completely cover my face. I start out with circular motion then figure 8 and finish with up and down to smooth everything out. I get nice shaves but I'm looking for a nice thick lather. Any tips?
Sometimes it occurs that a brush hogs the lather. If you squeez the brush do you get a lot of lather or just normal amount? Lather hogging is a very usual for brushes.
Use more product or less water, whip it faster and longer than you already are. TOBS is one of the easier lathering creams and generally stays really thick in the bowl, on the brush and on your face. Thinness is usually related to too much water. One of the problems with easy lathering soaps and creams is that a lot of times people will see a lot of lather and thing it's built, apply it, and it's runny. That's a sign that the lather actually wasn't ready.
Yup. That said, a thin lather is slicker than a thick lather. Too thin, though, and it just runs down the face.
My lather usually comes out dense, slick, with cushion,(definitely "NOT" runny or quick to evaporate) but thin in terms of how deep/thick it is on my face. I've never found any real advantage to a super thick lather layer. I can easily get 4+ passes out of my lather. I've read and I've adopted the motto that any lather not actually touching your face isn't really helping your shave that much. While Arko is my soap of choice as of now, I lather all my soaps the same.
Thanks for all the advice fellas. I made some adjustments and it has helped. I guess I still need to shake the idea of having a Barbasol in a can type of lather on my face that was an inch thick when I would use it.
All that "thickness" in "canned goo" is basically air. I also worried when I first started to make lather with real soap, brush and a bowl that it didn't look like the canned goo I was using before(I also was a barbasol user). It didn't take long before I realized that the "canned" thickness was all but useless and not even close to being as effective or protective as a thin, dense layer of real shave soap applied with a brush!!
I put a 500ml tube on my Amazon wish list for Christmas. I love the scent of the red and I love the way the Shea butter makes my face feel.
+1 When in doubt, use more product. Yes, sometimes it's surprising how much better the lather gets when you just keep working it and working it. You don't neeeeeeeed a ton of lather, though I do like to slather it on. I doubt the extra layers of lather are doing anything, but why risk it
Ever tried face lathering? I definitely recommend more product, but my lather also seemed to get a lot better when I left the bowl.
