Lectric shave as its name suggests is for electric razors to "stand" the whiskers up. So in theory could this be used as a preshave?
I remember using it when I used an electric and I hate it. Nasty, foul stuff. I preferred the talcum powder stick you rubbed on your face to lubricate it. It may have been my oily complexion that made be prefer the powder to the Lectric Shave.
I didn't realize "Lectric Shave" was a product! I thought you were suggesting to shave with an electric as a preshave, hahaha
In the name of Science, I went ahead and tried Lectric Shave minutes ago as a blade pre-shave. Today's shave routine: 1. Washed face normally with Nivea for Men Energizing Face Scrub. 2. Lectric Shave requires a dry face for application, so I patted dry, then generously applied Lectric Shave. 3. Allowed the Lectric Shave to dry for a couple of minutes. 4. Applied a hot damp towel to my face for a minute. 5. Splashed hot water on face. The Lectric Shave repelled most of the water applied to the face, so I really had to use a lot more water then normal. 6. Lathered up. The water repellence of the Lectric Shave made it more difficult to lather up, too. 7. Shaved. The Lectric Shave did in fact help stand up the beard. I could feel and especially hear a difference as my razor mowed down my beard. The results? An excellent BBS shave with no irritation! I was really surprised. I was rather concerned that the water repellence added by Lectric Shave was going to make my shave seem as if I'd applied cream to a dry face, but it did not have that effect. My conclusion: It did improve my shave, but added about five minutes to my shave routine--making the benefit not worth the extra effort. Your mileage may vary. Incidentally, back when I was using an electric shaver, Lectric Shave did not improve my electric shave at all. Remington's shave sticks and plain old baby powder worked great.
Great thanks for the use of the face there. I would have felt bad if it had gone sideways. Is the scent similiar to Skin Bracer? What type of cream/soap did you use? What type of razor and blade?
The fragrance: One could say that Lectric Shave smells something like Skin Bracer dliuted with really strong alcohol with notes of citrus added. I find it off-putting. The cream: Proraso. The razor and blade: A BIC Metal disposable. 20 minutes after shaving, I'm noticing that my difficult neck area has received an absolutely superb shave. If the shave ends up lasting longer than usual, I might be tempted to use the Lectric Shave again.
The fragrance of Lectric Shave, while off-putting, doesn't linger around long when used as above. Applying water to the face afterward, then applying the Proraso on top of it neutralized the scent/odor.
Dropped by my local Kmart and noted that Lectric Shave has been reformulated with Green Tea Extract. It now has a pleasant, subdued menthol and lime aroma which I rather liked. But as I have two bottles of the old witches brew on hand already, I didn't buy any to test. The above test was performed with a bottle of the old formulation that's maybe five years old. I also have a near-empty bottle that's about 9 years old and it smells vile. Think Skin Bracer blended with rubbing alcohol and turpentine. Oh, the horror...
Nice experiment, Ursa! I had thought about this before, but wasn't sure if it was worth the effort -- now I am sorely tempted!
Water makes a great preshave. My daily BBS shave; water followed by soap/cream of choice. That's it. Really. 'Lectric Shave indeed.
Normally, I wouldn't. But you guys are calmly (and apparently, seriously) discussing 'LECTRIC SHAVE here!!
Well of course. Why not. The thought occurred to me last night and I thought I would bring it up for discussion. A/V is discussed seriously. Mennan users should get the same leeway.
I checked the labels on both Lectric Shave and Aqua Velva, and neither are marked as being "Safe for Clearcoat Finishes". So don't expect me to try it out on the buggy hood of my truck, in the name of Science or otherwise...
Sounds interesting! I once used the Floid Electric Preshave but as it neither improved nor harmed my shaves I gave it away...
