LF ideas on how to pad a shaving soap stick in an old tin

So I bought this 100 year old Ricksecker shaving soap tin.
Looks great and I like it a lot.

The one thing that would make it even better is of course if I could use it to hold a more modern shaving stick such as Arko.

What I ultimately want is a way to safely secure the stick to the handle so that I can use it like the old Gillette Handy Grips. Now, of course there are no grooves here that I can screw a soap into so it will have to be some other solution. I think a round rubber padding/ring that I could slide onto the end of the Arko stick that would then fit snugly in the handle.

As you can see here there is a bit of give between the stick and the cap:

Luckily the length of the tin is near perfect for the Arko stick. It fits nicely in there even with the cap completely on :)

Any ideas/suggestions for best way to approach this would be greatly appreciated!

Worst case I may just bring it all with me down to the local h/w store and ask them if they got something like a very wide o-ring that could work....

Do we know for sure if those vintage tins held the soap tight, or just act as a case to protect the soap when not in use, much like it is doing with your Arko stick?

For holders like the Gillette Handy Grip ads show.s it being used in the way that the soap is secured to the cap. For this one no idea but that is how I'd like to use it :)

The O-ring sounds like a good idea, or you could use some elastic bands, I would presume. :)

    Thanks.
I've found that the old guys that work at the hardware stores often are excellent in coming up with some clever advice for how to fix things so I might just bring it down there next week and see what they can recommend.

The one I go to has been there since 1920 and have a lot...a LOT of stuff in the basement..most of which I have no idea what it's for...

do you have a Latoja shave stick?
it comes in its own (plastic) setup, which would make it wider than arko. May be able to place it in the bottom. and use the metal in leau of the plastic.

From the looks of that place, if they can't fix it... I love old hardware stores!

No La Toja shaving stick. I'll try some rubber bands tonight...and later in the week I'm going to pop by the h/w store :)

In my town (Brighton CO) there is a large ranchers co-op/ace hardware. I make up reasons to go there!

The rubber bands they use for Lobster claws would be ideal. Check out Safeway, see if they'll hook you up.

That's the kind of hardware store I'd get lost in. I miss the local hardware stores. Can't stand the big box stores.

Maybe melt a bit of bees wax and pour around the base of the Arko?
It dries pretty tough, and it's safe to the skin.
    Shouldn't hurt the metal container.
Probably doesn't cost much for a small chunk.

I would leave it be. After all it should be somewhat lose so the stick doesn't get stuck.

Usually, the old tins have a thick cardstock liner. It isn't a tube, but rather a rolled sheet. It makes the stick fit tightly and be adjustable. I have a few old tins for my sticks, and the original liner does the job.

Well I actually ended up resolving this little dilemma at a cost of about 50 cents.

Brought the stick and canister with me to the h/w store and after trying on a couple of them I found one size that seemed ideal.

They fit snugly around the stick

With the cap on it provides a very solid grip and can easily be used while lathering

Btw, that h/w store is awesome...
lot of stuff on the ground floor...but...the real loot is down this stairway...

..and you come down to aisles and aisles and more rooms...and more aisles...of 'stuff' - all over the place!
