In my quest for a perfect shave I was wondering if there are many 2" blades. The straight I have now is a 3" but I would like to get my hands on a 2". Im hoping not to dump a bunch of money into it, but I was hoping for direction on the best place to look. Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
Portland Razor Co, PRC makes a short blade straight called The Sprite. I don't own the Sprite but I own a couple of PRC razors and I am happy with the quality.
I was briefly a member of StraightRazorPlace.com before finding my home here at TSD. I recall "Shortys" being a thing there. If a vintage razor had a damaged toe a person of skill would alter it.
If you are just wanting to get a 2" blade experience, a Weck takes blades that are just under 2 1/4" (57mm). Hair shaper blades.
I've been using a Weck for the last month. It's not a straight razor. Shavettes are less forgiving of errors in technique. Upside is easier to maintain with blade changes instead of stropping, or learning to hone.
Is that a Weck? Wecks have a filled in shank past the blade and running through to the tail. That looks hollow, though it might just be the lighting. I find wecks to shave like a wedge grind straight razor, albeit with a bit sharper edge.
Just as you I was curious about the short blades and bought a 2 inch Portland Razor "Sprite" a while ago. I really like it - one of my best razors. Very maneuverable, and it looks good Question is: How much is "a bunch of money" for you? Sprite is $125 for the standard issue, $145 with wood scales instead of plastic.
I think there is some japanese steaights with short blade.kimzoris is shorter but there is western styles too
From my sideburn to the edge of my mustache is roughly 3" I was thinking possibly a smaller blade might work out for me. Right now I use the toe and do half then the heel. I was also thinking about how my neck hair grows, and some thing a little shorter might be easier to tackle the hair in that area. I found the Porter blade and they look really good. I've also seen good reviews on them, but thought there might be a variety. $125 isn't too hateful, just have to convince the wife on that. Lol Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
I have two American made small blades. One is a Genco that at one time had a guard that went over it, but I don't have the guard. The other one is a Cattaraugus that was restored by Kevin. Both of these razors have smaller blades, a little over two inches, and are around 4/8 in width. I have done full shaves with the Catt, but it works better just for touch up.
A number of Japanese razors have 50mm (1.97") blade lengths. Some are western (symmetrical) grinds; many are asymmetrical. I do like the shorter blades on these razors. Easy to navigate.
Chromed tin blade holder wrapped around a solid shank. Above photo shows the 57mm blade pushed out 1/2" inch. Below with a Weck Bantam. Same blade but shorter overall.
I ha ent used a shorty but have used a feather dx. I liked it very much, the length was perfect. It was the blades which were a killer, not that they were too sharp, just not comfortable. I believe hart also makes a shorty.
Here's a comparison for what I have on hand now. Top is a regular size HM Christensen Middle is a Genco with a 2.25" blade And a custom Diamond Edge I just received. The custom razor is perfect size for what I was looking for. I haven't shaved with the Genco yet since I just got it back from being honed. Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
It shaves like a dream too. And when I'm shaping my moustache up, the blade doesn't touch my nose and I don't fear losing a nostril lol Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
