Making custom DE Razor/brush stand

I'm currently working on making a stand for my razor/brush/bowl and ran into a bit of an issue: my razor hasn't come in yet! Seems kinda silly I know, but I ordered it on Amazon and it'll be a while before it's here. My issue is this: I don't know how large/small the diameter of the hole I'm going to drill to hold the razor needs to be, and I can't find any standard measurements for the any razor, let alone an average diameter for razors in general. I guess what I'm asking for is for anyone who is willing to post the make, model and dimensions of their DE razor so I can get a general idea of what size the hole should be. Thanks in advance!

What razor did you order? Someone may have the exact model you are waiting on.

I am in the process of building a rack for my scuttle/mug/bowl collection and decided to add a shelf for my vintage Gillette razors. I drilled each hole 1/2" in diameter. From left to right are: 1947 Super Speed, 1958 Cavalcade of Sports TV Super Speed, 1960 Long Handle Super Speed Adjustable, 1962 Slim Super Speed Adjustable, and a 1960 Fatboy.

The '47 and '58 fit cleanly. For the Fatboy I used a rat tail file to open the hole slightly - it almost fit cleanly in to the hole as drilled. As you can see, the '60 and '62 are a different story. They fit to the dial adjust knob. I am trying to decide whether to leave as is or open the hole with the file so they will display as the others.

The wood is 2"X6" pine I picked up at Lowes. Woodworking is my hobby and I normally use hardwoods such as oak, cherry, mahogany, etc. However, I had neck/cervical spine surgery the week before Thanksgiving and am limited to how much I can lift. Since the pine is light, I am able to work with it. Once fully recovered, I plan to do another in oak or cherry.

If you want to build before the razor arrives, you may consider the 1/2" hole and mod with a file if needed. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I ordered a Weishi 9306-f. I plan on upgrading to an EJ 99R once I get comfortable with the DE shave process (in all my research it sounds like the Weishi is a very mild razor and good for beginners but will need to be replaced)

I have a Weishi 9306 at home and can agree it is a mild razor. I will measure the handle tonight but I think a 1/2" hole like Ed used will be OK for the Weishi.

That looks pretty good. Do you think 5/8 hole would accomadate even the Fatboys? The 1/2 is a good generic size though.

I believe the 5/8" would work for the Fatboy. Good point.:)

Looks like 1/2" would be a little snug for the Weishi...

It's not the best picture, but might help.

Here are a couple photos of the work in progress. I'm making an L shaped stand with a tray for the bowl and a hole for the razor to rest in. The brass rod you see with the black rubber cap will be cut down and bent into a brush holder, leaving it suspended above the bowl to dry properly. I've also attached the sketch of what the finished product will look like.

Ill post a few more pics as I go. Any feedback would be welcome!

Here are some updated pictures from today. Got the general shape together and a groove for the bowl. Ill be finishing putting the pieces together, applying a few coats of stain and the brush holders. IMG_5367 (640x480).jpg IMG_5369 (640x480) (2).jpg

If someone would make a brush holder that holds 6+ brushes, they would make a mint.

This one would hold six brushes, but I have three razors on the bottom.

Looks great! A good coating of poly to resist moisture may help in the long run.
Also, at least it occurs on my counter top, water tends to collect and if I were using a wood stand, I would consider adhering small rubber feet or pads on the base to accomplish two things: stability (no slipping), and an air gap between the base & countertop. nothing fancy—you could even use those clear rubber feet bumpons from Amazon. The idea is simply to avoid water absorption through the end grain of the wood.

Thanks for the ideas! I like the thought of the feet. I was actually going to design it to be wall mountable as well to avoid being messed with by my 18 month old son... But I plan on eventually moving it down to the counter, so I'll definitely invest in some small rubber feet for it!

Here's the stand that is sanded/stained and a single coat of poly. Still have at least 1 coat on poly to put on and the attach the brush holder arms in their holes and it'll be done! image.jpg
