A Merkur34C was one of the first razors I ever bought, as I prefer BullDog type handles and while I understand there are some differences in head design between the 23C and 34C, with the 34 supposedly being more aggressive,I never thought of my 34 as being overly aggressive and found it shaved well...
One "BIG" advantage I see with the 23 over the 34 is the 23 is a 3 piece design, while the 34 a 2 piece....With a 3 piece design you can use different handles(different lengths, weights, knurling), with the shave head...I'm unsure what other handels(Gillette,Weber,Sabi or Cadet) the Merkur may work with so you will need to check that out?....Had I'd been able to change handles on my 34C I probably would not have bought my "MUCH" loved EJ89..So while the Merkur 23C seems like a good razor,I know the EJ89 is a "GREAT" razor and only costs a few bucks more..:)

I have thought about buying EJ. Any other models you would recommend?

There are several in the EJ price range or lower that are fairly good and affordable...However if you want to stepup in quality and get one of the "BEST" deals out there I.M.O. You may want to look into getting a Weber Polished StainlessSteel 3 piece razor with either a BullDog or Classic handle...I have two of the shave heads(DLC and Polished SS) and all three handles(BullDog,Wave and Classic).....I find mine shaves comparebly to the EJ, perhaps slightly more aggressive, but with excellent American craftsmanship, upgraded materials and a price that simply can't be beat, as far as I know of...It's definately worth your time and effort to look into I.M.O... Ed Weber is friendly and answered all my questions to my satisfaction.....:happy088:

How rigid is the blade held in the Weber? It's very flexi in the EJ and Mühle, so if it's more rigid in the Weber I might venture in that direction.

I purchased a Merkur 180 - I think it is basically the same as the 23c - for my son and he likes it. I have one on order that apparently is taking a scenic trip from Hong Kong to arrive here in Colorado. If it is similar to the 34c HD, I would say it is a good razor.

I'll second this. I love my Weber PH. I got one for Christmas and I've used it almost exclusively since then. It gives a great shave and love the handle.

I'd guess the flexibility of the blades between the Weber and EJ is similar..

Thank you for that! I won't cut it off the list, but the flex is something I've been eyeballing of lately.

If you want a flex free blade perhaps you should consider a Slant Bar DE,an SE or even a Rolls Razor....:)

Not necessarily flex free but I must admit the flex there is in the EJ/Mühle amazes me... makes me wonder the decisions behind it. It's not difficult to design the same head with the same gap and exposure and then make it almost flex free.

The Slant I have is very good in that regard. Love my 37C.

I use a 23C with a Weber Bulldog handle - GREAT shave, and I've found that with the Viking's Sword blade, it gives me a BBS shave almost every time...though as always, YMMV

After reading this thread, I think my next razor purchase will be a Weber 3 piece - anyone know how much more aggressive the Weber razor is compared to the 23C?
