So I bought a Merkur 33C Standard from Amazon, and today was my first shave. I used an Astra Superior Platinum blade, Col Conk Almond Glycerin soap. It was my first time using a DE SR, so I have a few nicks here and there, but nothing to bleed over I'm surprised I didn't do more damage, considering 23 years of using cartridges. The 33 C seemed to do well, but I wonder, being a newb, what others have experienced. has anyone else out there used a 33c? What havbe your experiences been like? What blade would you suggest for a newb?
Sorry, never used a 33C, but I do have several Merkurs: three 34's (aka HD), an 11C and a Futur - all are fantastic shavers. As for what blade, only you can answer that. They are perhaps the biggest item discussed here on the forums that can get rave love 'em/hate 'em reviews from both sides of the fence. I would suggest getting a sample pack and trying them out for yourself. I've found blades that work for me but not for other guys (Dorco ST-301). I've tried blades that others love but tear me up (Derby). I've tried blades that don't do so well in this razor but are fantastic in that one. The Dorco ST-301 does better in a Merkur than in a vintage Gillette, while the Astra Super Platinum works very well in what ever razor I put it in. Mind you - these are all my experiences. Yours and others may vary. Hope you find one that works for ya!
Thanks. I did pick up a sampler that came with just about all the major names except Feather. I'm looking forward to graduating to that blade eventually. My beard grows in really thick. That being said, I'll probably also upgrade to a beefier razor, too.
