Is the Merkur 34C the same as the Hefty Classic? (I would provide a link to West Coast Shaving, but the forum won't let me yet :sad024) I'm thinking of getting one as my first DE, but I'm not sure if they're the same thing. Thanks.
The 34c is the HD or heavy duty. It is an excellent shaver & would make a great first DE. It could well be the only one you ever get.
Our pleasure. If you get one enjoy it! and please, feel free to introduce yourself to the forum so that we can all welcome you.
No worries Benson. Get yourself over to the newbies thread & also enter your self into the latest newbie draw. Also Westcoastshaving is a good place to get blade sample packs. These will help you in your search for the best blades for your razor.......for the ultimate in BBS. Fozz
The newbie draw was my first post. And I just ordered the "Everything" sampler pack from West Coast Shaving two minutes ago... so many blades I'm not even sure where to start.
My suggestion: Take out the Merkurs and Feathers and then just blindly pick one....don't be scared to use the feathers just do so after you have a month or so under your belt.
Yeah, I was going to wait on the Feathers based on what mantic59 said in one of his videos. So are the Merkurs also "ninja sharp?"
They're sharp, but not quite as sharp as the feathers & they do not last as long in my opinion. It could quite well work out the opposite for you Benson.
I'd say they are the polar opposite of Feather blades: dull and rough to the max. Merkurs are the only blades that have not worked for me in any razor that I have owned.
Excellent advice. The Feathers aren't so bad. Until you get your technique perfected a bit they are an invitation to getting cut though. The least sideways motion and a fresh Feather will cut you every time in my experience. The Merkurs are hit or miss in my opinion I have the HD and it works fine with them most of the time. Not so in my Super Speed or Tech. Every once it a while you'll get one that's just horrible from the start. As in, load a fresh blade, take one stroke, remove it and throw it away.
I think that Mühle and Edwin Jagger are offering a better machine than the Merkur 34C, the Müle R89 and the Edwin Jagger DE (both have the same head) are better finished than the 34c and the head design is newer ......I have a 33C and an R106 from Mühle, and I am happier with the Mühle.........but the HD is a new classic, great buy as well.
I have been thinking in getting a EJ DE89 in the future as it seems that theyre really good, but the HD is simply a classic.I have both a Merkur HD and Gillette Rocket HD and,I dunno how to describe it,theyre just feel different than the other DEs that I have on my hand,as well as theyre brilliant shavers.
