I like my Merkur 34c but sometimes I want a closer shave. I was wondering out of curiosity what you would rate the 34c against what number setting on the Progress?

I'd like to know the answer to this myself. I want to get a brand new razor (to go with my two vintage razors) and I'm trying to decide between the Progress and the 34c.

You can open up a Progress enough to flay the skin off your face or close it down to where it barely cuts.

The Progress is one of the best razors ever created. Mainly due to its adjustability. It has a flawless finish and of course you can have it customed with a fancy knob including jewels if you like. The bottomline is the shave which is second to none.

Count me in as another vote for the Progress. It does have its quirks but it can give you a wonderful shave. I have both an HD and a Progress (and a Slant and a Futur and...well, that's another episode): I'd say the shave on the HD is about the halfway point on the Progress' dial.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I went ahead and ordered the Progress even though I have read so many mixed reviews. I'll give an update after I've used it for a week or so.

I received the progress and shaved with it. I used a 7 A.M. blade. I set it to the 2 setting. That seemed too much so I lowered it to 1.5. That worked well and I finished my shave with no problems. Some neck hair was left but I didn't want to finish the first shave on a bad note so I left it at that. The next day I was looking at the plastic adjustment knob and noticed 2 cracks thru it. Anyone else have this problem?

The plastic knob is molded onto the stub of the knob assembly.
The material is very tough and not usually prone to cracking.
Are you sure that the cracks aren't aren't molded in.
Some people don't like the knob because it cheap looking.
I make a replacement knob assembly and a new batch is due back from the plating shop tomorrow.
    Here's a picture before plating.

Yes I'm sure they are cracks. If the site does not fix the problem I'll post who they are so others won't get ripped.

If the vendor won't take care of you contact Anne at Dovo/Merkur she will make things right.

Thanks. Great resource. I'll give them some time first.
