I'm sure most of you have already seen this, but I wanted to share it anyway. I found it to be interesting and a good representation of scale for anyone that might be interested in purchasing.
That is an interesting vid of the whole process. Having seen vids of the disassembly of the older Gillette Adjustable Model 195s ('Fat Boy'), my first thought when seeing this Merkur Vision being made was ,'I wonder if the zinc alloy & other materials used will hold up as well (50 years plus) as the brass & nickel Gillettes?' Side note: When the Fatboy came out in 1958, it was priced at $1.95 (hence, the model name). That equates to $15.76 in 2013 dollars. Looking backwards, the Vision price (avg $150.) would have cost $18.50 in 1958—the price of almost 10 FatBoys back then.
That's funny. The Fatboy is better made, it will last longer and shaves better than the Merkur and it's still cheaper to buy, even with a Rhodium replate.
I agree and while I have a Futur on its way to me (didn't pay retail) as well as owning a Mergress I think that's as far as I will go with Merkur. Unless I can find a vintage gold progress!
Thanks for that info Kevin...Certainly puts a little different take on price when your trying to decide between new and vintage...Most FatBoys on ebay still sell for way under a $100, in fact for less than the cost of one Future you could possibly own two or even all three Gillette adjustables(FatBoy,Slim & Super Adjustable..
I've been so pleased with my DE89L that I haven't considered getting another. I am, however, hoping to make the switch to straights. I'll have two on Christmas day
