So has anyone tried both these razors and can comment on which one they prefer and WHY ?

I just received a giftcard to a shaveshop and consider getting one or the other.

Price is of no concern here, and I already have enough ShaveCreams and after shaves & EDT SPRAY to last a lifetime - so need your opinion on these two DE RAZORS !

    Thx in advance :)

    That's a weird comparison, you're talking about a high-end TTO vs a mid-range 3 piece razor...

The Vision is quite bulky, has spotty QC from what I've seen, and imo isn't really worth the money.

    To each their own though.

I have to agree with Aaron there if your technique is good the muhle would be the better option in my opinion, Ive tried the vision as with most merkur the finnish could always be better, and the muhle will be a lot quicker to clean and easyer by a long way. the merkur futur is a better razor and smaller. The vision is big (but a really nice design it does look good):)
As with all things here YMMV.
How about a new brush instead? didnt you get a few razors last month?

    SAY WHAT ?

The Merkur Vision is considered the best Merkur DE razor (according to my friend, who is a Merkur fan, I should add) and cost 799,- (equivalent to circa $120) and the Mühle R89 DE razor cost 399,- (equivalent to circa $60) ?!?

I'm a HUGE Mühle/Edwin Jagger Fan - but trying to broaden my horizon a bit. Should I look at Pils or Feather instead ?

Think I'll just stay true to Mühle then - they make excellent heads and Excellent finish on all their razors.

I clearly know very little about Merkur - thought higher price reflected higher quality.....guess this is not always true.

I'm not sure where you've read the Vision to be the best DE Merkur puts out, if anything the Progress and Futur are better, and even they suffer from QC like all Merkur razors.

My GF realised I had a new interest in razors, so gave me a giftcard :)

Yes, I bought 2 great Mühle Sophist razors recently and a great 23 mm Mühle Sophist silvetip badger brush.

I may look at getting the more aggressive Mühle R41 instead then and maybe a brush, just not sure what will best my Mühle Sophist Silvertip 23 mm brush ?

I asked a friend who has the Vision :)

And then looked at the prices - Progress is 399,- , Futur is 549,- while Vision is 799,-

I must disagree. But it's a YMMV thing. I personally find the VISION to be superior to all d/e's I have ever used. Merkurs are known to suffer in the QC department, but I have NEVER had an issue with QC on any Merkur I've ever owned . I do not own a progress, but I have a Futur. And the Vision is far superior and it may be the very best shaver ever invented for a newbie's hands. It is not choosy when it comes to proper angle , I've found it has a very wide sweet spot, it takes work to find a bad angle with the vision. It's totally blade friendly (shares this trait with the Futur). Almost any angle, any blade and a DFS easily. It's big but that in no way interferes with it's performance, it's very nimble. If I was to only have one razor it would be a Vision.

As to compare it to a 3 piece razor? There's No way to compare , it's 2 different styles of razor.

Of coarse Razors are a YMMV thing. I Love my Vision, I don't like Fat Boys and I think EJ's are over rated.

I've got a Feather Popular that cost me $18.99 USD and it gives me as good a shave as any Futur/Vision I've tried. Never judge a razor by its price. Spend more time finding the correct blade/soap/cream combination.

Ask Aaron he will give you a good idea on a brush, but will depend on budget, knott size and how soft you want it. (and also what brands the shop your gift card is valid at carries)

At the end of the day, there is only one opinion that counts. The person using the razor. It either works for you or it does not. No rocket science here. Just trial and error.

Of course everything is YMMV - but if we all took this literally, then we might as well close this forum down :p

I'm not sure about closing the site down:eek:. Opinions on razors and blades are the most subjective of all things shave related. YMMV should be taken literally as that is the subjective nature of YMMV. As for your OP, the VISION IMHO is an excellent adjustable d/e, one that I am very happy I own. To me it's well worth the price and if it ever breaks, I will sell off some Fat Boys from my collection and buy another. It's a great razor IMHO. Favorite and Best d/e I own. There are many negative opinions on the forums of the Vision regarding it being too big or bulky. Many of those post seem to be made by those who have never owned or tried it.:shocked002: It does LOOK bulky, but it shaves nimble.

As for Muhle/EJ 89, I've owned an EJ 89 in the past and didn't care for it. But it has many fans and has been the flavor of the month for quite a while. (when I first started wet shaving Merkur HD's were the flavor), I never could get satisfactory results from the 89. It just didn't work for me, but others love it. So it's back to YMMV.

I'd buy the Vision if I were you. As I actually own one and Love it. But of coarse YMMV.

Definitely a YMMV I suppose, Mühle/EJ currently have the best fit and finish of any razors out there.
There's quite a few brushes to consider, depends on what size you want, density of the knot and hair type.

I would use the gift card for something other than the Muhle 89/41. They seem to run around $60 here in the States. If you order them from Connaught Shaving they can be shipped here for $36. Also, they are both in stock right now.

I'm quite contempt with my new Mühle Sophist Silvertip 23 mm brush - so will probably stay with my setup and acquire a Mühle R41 Open Comb and practice with that when I'm a bit more experienced in a few months time.

Just ordered this for the value of my giftcard:

2 bottles of Mühle Seabuckthorn After Shave BalmLotion
2 bottles of Mühle Sandalwood After Shave BalmLotion
2 Truefitt & Hill Advanced Facial Moisturizer facecream

Already own a couple of the Mühle AloeVera After Shave BalmLotion and in my view it beats both Castle Forbes AS Balm, Musgo Real Balm and T&H Balms - both regarding the balm lotion (it's in between a balm and a lotion, which I like a LOT) and the bottle design and how large a dosis you pump out.

But looking really hard at that Mühle R89 with the stand ;)

    I just did :)

I'm in Denmark, Europe and have to pay 35% (tax and VAT) on top of shipping - and can get a good deal on a new Mühle R41 with stand for only $60 in Denmark. This is a good price in Europe - all prices are 25% - 35% higher here than in the US !

Realizing YMMV, I also find the Vision to be the best razor for me. I have tried and have many DE razors but the Vision is far above all the others when it comes to providing the best shave. I also have other Merkurs and have found no problems with the quality control. Some may find fault with the Vision because it does have moving parts (silo doors and adjusting mechanism), which require regular cleaning to operate smoothly especially if you have hard water. But cleaning is simple and not time consuming, and is well worth the effort required. The Merkur slant and the Muhle R41 (2011) are close to providing as smooth and as close shave as the Vision but the Vision is far superior in my opinion.
