I would like to assemble a minimalist shave kit. Everything must go in a carry on bag for airline travel (so no DE razor or blades) and be used for at least a week. I expect this to involve compromise, but I still want to enjoy a decent and comfortable daily shave. What's your recommendation for razor, brushless cream, and aftershave balm? Thanks!
Cremo, Pacific Caffeinated Cream, or C.O Bigelow. Bigelow isn't brushless by design, but I've lathered it with my hands with good success. Nivea sensitive balm. There are tons of other balms out there though. I'm interested to see other recommendations. Can't really recommend a good razor. I guess a Mach3 would work okay.
Can you mail a blade or two ahead? If so, I'd take a vintage Gillette three piece Like the one in this pic Then I'd take Anthony Logistics shave cream Now an aftershave I think I'd go with Barbasol (the green one) That should be a very minimal outfit.
I would assume this would be for a carry-on bag, otherwise you could check the razor of our choice. So, alcohol-based aftershaves would be eliminated from contention. I have some small travel bottles of Nivea that I found at Target years ago. I refill those and take them along with me.
I forget... What's the TSA's stand on Injector razors? Can you have an Injector magazine in carry-on?
They don't address injector razors specifically but they make it pretty clear that only cartridge/disposable razors are acceptable. Injectors and DE razors are fine without the blades of course, but others have said that injector blade packs are definitely not allowed since the blades can be easily ejected. In order to alleviate the hassle, I just took a cheap Dorco Mach3 copy in my carry on luggage after seeing praise for Dorco in the cartridge razor forum. For lather, I bought some travel size Gillette canned stuff, which was the only travel size foam that my local stores carried. I also brought some mediocre balm with me and even though I haven't tried it yet, I will probably switch to the Proraso white balm in the future since it comes in the maximum allowed travel size my default at 3.4 oz.
If it's an option, be a true minimalist. Don't pack anything. Once you land go to the nearest Rite-aid, Walgreens, cvs, Walmart, etc and pick up a travel pack and leave it all in the trash when you go home. Bic makes a decent "sensitive skin" disposable. Fixed head, Single blade and a pack of 12 is like $3-$4 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
If you're going for a week just take your regular gear and check your bag. For a one or two day trip... 2 Bic single blade disposable razors, travel size Gillette Foamy, some Old Spice transfered to a small glass travel vial, a syptic pencil (just in case). I throw several other items in my travel shave kit, including toothbrush and toothpaste, Q-tips, hairbrush, nail clippers, tweezers, Alka Seltzer, and antibiotic ointment.
Gillette Good News twin blade disposable Kiss My Face cream Clubman. KMF is great without a brush, maybe better that way. Edit: oh, balm: Nivea.
That could be interesting. You'd put you face to the whims of the local market. With U.S. retailers being so generic in their product line a Weishi/VDH DE & brush, Store brand Israeli Personna Red's, Cremo, and Aqua Velva would be easy to find. A complete starter kit for gifting to friends, family, or a homeless person as you head back to the airport.
I got all excited reading the list of generic goodies and then got goose bumps on the gifting part Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
