I got my hair cut at Louie's Barber Shop on Friday after work. Louie has been around forever. We were discussing straight razors and he told me about an old trick for getting the ULTIMATE SHAVE......MINK OIL. He said use mink oil as a pre-shave with a hot towel, and the wiskers wipe off effortlessly. (he also told me about using "jewler's paste" on a strop for sharpening the straight razor. Works like a charm.)

Have any of you ever used mmink oil? do you recommend it?

Haven't tried it, I am wondering if this is somewhat similar to Lanolin Oil

I would try anything at least once :D

I've used it on my shoes and other leather goods, I would be concerned about clogged pores though when using it on my face...don't think I'll try it.

Jewelers rouge / paste is similar to Chromium Oxide, although there are different abrasive levels...The Chomium Oxide .5 is pretty cheap though..so I'd stick with it :)

Too me it doesnt sound so absurd as one might think because what is leather , leather is simply SKIN just like your face. the only problem arrives the shoe is DEAD skin..the face is I would hope Alive breathing skin.

So you;d def. need to watchout for Clogging the pores if the substance is doing something to leather that you dont want on life breathing skin.

So watch /read for any chemical substances in it . " Helps to Water proof leather thats something you def. dont want happening when shaving you want to take in as much of water as you can to the face to lubricate and soften the whiskers.

Hilarious Idea but if it works? ok who is going to take one for the group ? ::

I use mink oil to condition my strops. It may be a good idea to put in on your face, if you intend to strop your straight razor on your cheeks that is! :rofl

Good for leather. Bad for any stitching and it will darken stuff down if left in the sun.

But to be honest, I had some other "new" stuff in the mix today.
