Hi all, still playing around with different brush handle shapes over the weekend while I'm waiting for the new badger knots to arrive. Also knocked up a stand for this brush and my razor, but instead of a bracket with slot to accommodate the brush I thought I would simplify things and use 2 magnets as the conection point. They are called "Rare Earth magnets" and measure 3mm x 3mm and do the job of holding up the brush quite nicely. Actually the trickest part was bending the 1/4" SS round bar to a tightish curve but overall I think it turned out ok as a prototype.
One of the more creative stands I've seen. Love the touch of adding a hole for the razor to stand in.
This explains it better...the rare part is misleading though. Rare-earth magnets are strong permanent magnets made from alloys of rare earth elements. Developed in the 1970s and '80s, rare-earth magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets made, producing significantly stronger magnetic fields than other types such as ferrite or alnico magnets. The magnetic field typically produced by rare-earth magnets can be in excess of 1.4 teslas, whereas ferrite or ceramic magnets typically exhibit fields of 0.5 to 1 tesla. There are two types: neodymium magnets and samarium-cobalt magnets. Rare earth magnets are extremely brittle and also vulnerable to corrosion, so they are usually plated or coated to protect them from breaking, chipping, or crumbling into powder.
Boat load of information here. Thanks so much for providing such a comprehensive response. There goes my day studying Earth Magnets.
Hi all, Thanks for the comments. I thought I would add a pic of the magnets for your reference. As you can see they are inserted in the SS holder and the end of brush handle, also the magnets are sitting on the steel rule. They are tiny magnets but are quite strong with enough strength to even hold up a razor. They are cheap and available on Ebay in lots of different sizes.
