I just purchased the above razor from Highball in the TSD classifieds. He was great to deal with. Shipped promptly and kept me informed and supplied a tracking number.

I had heard this was an aggressive razor so I decided to use it last night for the first time. I am glad I did. I put a Dorco 300 razor in. In all my other razors the Dorco is to mild ie I get a lousy shave. But I figured this would be better than Feathers - the only other blade I have. Even so I looked like Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands or Sweeney Todd) had shaved me. There was blood everywhere. I was trying to be so careful and I still bled. I cleaned up. Splashed on some aftershave and rubbed my face. It was incredible. Best shave ever. Better than BBS.

Up to that point I was thinking I had made a mistake. But the shave was incredible. Highball had warned me of blade alignment but I checked that and it was fine. I will keep trying and perfect my technique with this razor. Heck even if I slice my nose off the shave is worth it.

    Thanks again to Highball.

I have a Mühle R89 since a week and a half and stepped over from the Merkur 23C.

After my first shave I had a bit of irritation that can to notice after applying alum. The second shave that was almost gone and afterwards I had no problems with the razor.

Only a very smooth BBS shave :D

Keep trying, cause it is absolutely worth it!

Ahhhhhh Open comb....mmmmm....I prefer the close comb....less agressive but a good razor also....I hope you improve your skills with the R89

OK, I understand that PhilNH5 has an older Mühle R89 w/ Open Comb....

I have purchased a brand new one recently that has a closed comb.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding :ashamed001

The Dorco 300 blade worked well. by the 3rd day I was nick free and getting excellent shaves. I had actually disparaged the dorco in another post as too mild.

Then I put a Feather blade in (insert scary music here).
After 3 shaves I am still getting a dozen nicks or bleeders. I look terrible and need to wait an additional 15 minutes for all the blood to staunch.

I have been as cautious as possible. Good lather. No pressure. No accross the grain. But simple nort south shaving leaves me bleeding.

i will put this combo down for the work week and try it again next weekend. But right now the Feather Muhle 89 is to aggressive for me.

I've never tried a Slant, but I can't imagine a DE razor more aggressive than this. Even when switching the head cap (because I think the original is too small) to the wider one used on the Merkur OC, the blade still has a propensity to bite.

But boy does it mow through whiskers! It's a serious piece of kit.

I know what you mean. I know the new ones have the same head as the Edwin Jagger I bought, but that doesn't mean I don't want them both. I love the classic look of the new EJ and Mühle razors. They just look classier than the Merks.

A Merkur head piece would not fit on the original Muehle R89 which is being discussed.

    head piece

    hi
the head piece won't fit on , threads different ??
is it now up for grabs , i would quite like one of these , if the head will not fit a Merker it won't fit a old Gillette either . :(

    Try, Try Again

"i will put this combo down for the work week and try it again next weekend. But right now the Feather Muhle 89 is to aggressive for me."

I tried the R89 yesterday with the 5 day old Feather that was in it. I thought it would be dull enough to use as I originally had a Dorco 300 in the R89 and it worked well. But alas it did not go well. Blood all over. I was ready to call it quits.

But I had to try a new Dorco 300 just to make sure I got the excellent shaves w/o the bleeding. Today I did just that. No bleeding! and a great shave. This is my next to last Dorco from a sampler pack. In all of my other razors the Dorco was near useless. But it shines in this razor.

The post of the original R89 pictured above has a smaller diameter threaded post which makes it not big enough to screw into a Merkur or Gillette.

The newer R89 is a safety bar version. The open come is now the R41. The newer models should fit into the merkur or gillette.

Uh, I have the razor being discussed, the old R89. I left the comb/tooth part on, and replaced the head cap with a wider Merkur one. It fits. I put it into my Parker buffalo horn handle.

I assumed that the top head piece was the part in question, not the toothed portion. Sorry for the misinformation.
