In the late 1960s when I was a small boy my grandfather would give his young grandsons a lathered brush and one of his razors (without a blade) and let us copy him as he shaved. When I started shaving as a 15 year old my father suggested throw away bic razors, I went for a Gillette Techmatic. I guess my first SE razor. Boots shaving soap and brush. I used it through UNI and then progressed through various cartridges and ever increasing blade numbers (recently up to six in the Pace 6) and price. In the late 80s I found Taylor's in Jermyn Street and loved their shaving creams and brushes. Last year had my first straight razor shave at a local barbers, and loved it. I guess I had always thought DEs old fashioned (associated with grandfathers and a scar from finding his blade and playing with it). Recently talking to my younger brother about his desire to make straight razors similar to the ones our great grandfather left, I decided to try a DE as a entry to traditional shaving (I forgot to mention the Schlick twin blade injector). So to tonight I used a Proraso Boar brush, Proraso menthol cream and a Jagen David B40, Sainsbury's blades (better selection on order). 2 passes only only slight nick, a good close shave.
