Hello my name is Tiago and i am looking for a straigh razor to use for the first time and i would like some of your expertise in the area.

Im looking for something that is small, that i can travel with, but at the same time very durable, as i value most size and durability and quality

I have read alot about this german brand solinger dovo, and i know that german products are awesome, but i use currently a dougle edge razor from gillete (3piece)
Sizewise i would like it to be around 10cm, 4inch lengh when closed

    All sugestions are welcomed

    thanks

What you are describing it what we now call a Mini or Micro Razor

They are very very very Rare in the Vintage world, in fact so rare that out of 10's of thousands of razors honed I have only honed 3

Max Spechter @ Madaspen makes them

The really small Vintage razors that you are going to see on E-bay etc: often with a curvy blade are not for shaving they are Corn Razors..

    Honestly,,

I like the Feathers,,, But I have been at this for 34+ years and I know very well how to adjust for an EXTREMELY keen edge .

Feathers can be pretty intense for a new shaver

    BUT

In a sense they are also a bit easier as you don't have to learn Stropping and edge maintenance as well as how to shave :)

This is Max's website, http://www.vintagestraightrazors.com/ his are custom order only and Yes you can drop my name he and I are very good friends but I am older, smarter, and better looking hehehe

If the Jaguar is a vintage razor post a pic and we can all see what shape it is in

Wow, that little razor is something else! I'd never heard of micro razors. I have a razor had a third of razor chopped down. How does it make the shave different?

They are quite similar to a Kamisori but with a Western grind.. I guess the allure is really for trimming and tight places ie: I hear people say they are great for the Mustache area and under the jawline..

I can see the appeal in having a smallish blade for that reason. Quite the 'specialty' tool, though, akin to the Merkur 'trimmer.'

Are there any really affordable ones out there so that if I end up preferring DE after all then not too much lost on the venture?

I went with a sight unseen razors from Larry at Whipped Dog. They are pretty reasonable in terms of price and will be shave ready. He is great to work with and will answer your questions.

Be very very very careful with that ad,,,

That is one deceptive ****** the way it is written

A GB Buckingham is a piece of JUNK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! will NEVER hold a shaving edge

A Dovo is a real razor

The way that ad is written you might very well buy a Buckingham at a Dovo price :(

Sorry I get a little worked up at stuff like this

I had Larry at Whipped Dog hone a few straights for me and they came out BEAUTIFUL. Great costumer service, very honest.

I sent in a Philharmonic to be sharpened that had never been honed before and I had no idea of what I had. He let me know that that razor was practically worth its weight in gold and he didn't think it was a good idea honing it if I wasn't going to use it.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is if you're just getting into straight razor shaving, pick up one of Whipped Dog's shave ready package deals. See if it's for you and if you like it. Then take it from there before you sink a bunch of money into something that you might not be all that into.

My first straight razor was through Revisor. If you are Europe bound you can pick them up at a reasonable price. Plus they have a selection of NOS on their website.
