Hi guys I just wanted to share my new brush I got this one from mycarver. it arrived in the mail today. I have not had a chance to use it. its made out of Padauk Wood and aged Ivory with a 26mm over stuffed Knot. the pictures are all from mycarver and he shows how the brush comes to life.
Nice, that reminds me of an Omega! If mycarver gets some more work in, I'm sure hes going to be over the top!
Very nice, mycarver did excellent work! Thanks for the pic Aaron, I knew the brush reminded of another I had seen somewhere.
Glad you're enjoying the brush Mynor! Yes , the Omega was his inspiration for this brush, a very interesting design. And does it feel good in your hand. Mark
Awesome brush! What are specs? Thanks Mark, great work as always my friend. Look forward to many more
Thanks Sir-ed8, This is a hand filling brush, but feels just right due to the shape. ( at least my hand it does) . The total height is just over 150mm, knot set at (+-) 50mm. As Mynor indicates it's a 26mm UK overstuffed Super Badger. With the density of this knot and his plans for use , it should work very well. I made the "aged" ivory for two reasons, one, well because I can ,and two,the commercial ivory looks too white in my opinion for this brush. In some cases the contrast looks good ( I have some personal brushes done with it) but here I wanted a softer, unified look. And to me,, actual ivory leans away from pure white, and pure white reminds me of a refrigerator.Little in nature is pure white. Must be the "artist" in me. Now between the natural wood, the natural bristles,, the ivory isn't so glaring and un-natural looking. I have been inundated with my "regular" work , but I have managed to spin up a few other brushes with my butterscotch mixes and others just to have some fun, which I'll be posting soon. Sorry,, my babbling got away from the question of specs. Brushes are more than just specs to me. They're more personal.
Cool looking brush.. love the production shots. Nice to know the back-story on brushes, custom or other-wise...
WTF is a Chinese plug? I would still like to see how it's done and then maybe make a few. It would be nice to be able to make a straight razor and brush in a matching set. What would the best material be for the bristles?
Many knots are made in China. It's simply the cluster or "knot" of bristles that make the brush. They tend to have a plug if you will, an area where the base of all the bristles are gathered and held with either a string or a bit of glue to hold them all together in one big bunch. This is then simply glued into a hole , drilled or turned, in the handle. The knot of bristles is measured in it's diameter as 18mm 20mm 25mm etc. and a corresponding hole is made in the handle. The loft,, or the amount of exposed bristles desired will determine how deep the hole needs to be to determine how deep to drill the hole. For example, a knot might be 65mm overall,, and you want a 45mm loft. Drill a 20mm deep hole, glue in the knot to have a 45mm loft. This can and will affect the performance of the brush as you might be aware. I have made several scales and brushes that match along with matching bowls and stands. It's neat having a custom set of pieces. Fun stuff!
Very nicely done. To clarify the process.. here is what a knot looks like when you buy it.. The knot is sold by hair style and quality and size range - but the size won't be perfect. You take a handle with the appropriately sized hole and use marine epoxy, gorilla glue, or some other waterproof long lasting glue to glue to knot into the hole. As mentioned, the depth of the hole will affect the action of the knot. However, care has to be taken to not put so much epoxy in the hole as to end up all over the outside of the handle or in the knot bristles. It can be very rewarding to restore an old brush for your own use or to make your own brush from scratch.
I love It! I honestly have to say that this is a huge upgrade for me. my first brush is an off brand badger the knot now seems very thin and the handle very small. my new custom brush. is very hefty the knot is very soft and full. I noticed that I now use even less cream and it lathers up like crazy. the handle is also unusual but it easy to use. the style conforms to different ways of holding it. I also have to say since mycarver makes custom furniture pieces with fine woods this brush in a way some how resembles a fine piece of furniture I don't know if that makes sense to anyone. its just very nice and has a high end look, feel, and heft to it. I will definitely order up another brush from him in the future this time I would like something for my pops. Thanks Again Mark.
Ah, thanks guys. Now I have some clarity. For those who don't know, I'm a knife maker and started work on a couple of straight razors (my first attempt on these) and I thought it would be nice if I could make matching brushes. Any advice on where I can buy high quality plugs will be highly appreciated. I have a better chance of falling pregnant than finding it in my neck of the woods.
