After much deliberation and debate, I think I've finally figured out which handles I want to re-knot next. Along with which knot to order for each. There's still about 5 other handles I want to do but these will be next. These pictures show other brushes I've already done to show what knot I'll order for the handle in front of it. I liked all these knots for one reason or another and want to "improve" on their setting(depth) in a new handle. I'm also going to wait to get the old knots cleaned out before ordering this time, so I don't order too big a knot and create more work for myself in the handle. (Ahhh! Subject is supposed to be "My next restores" )
Nice collection. Any thoughts on knots? Virginia Sheng sells marvelous Finest and Best Badger knots at a very reasonable cost.
I've always got my knots from TGN. I can't remember the exact knots shown above but have them wrote down. I do know one is a boar knot, and a black badger. The last one is a fine badger I think.
The left are ones I've already done and are the knots I'm going to order for the handles on the right. I spent hours trying to decide which knot/colors would look good in what handle. And still am not sure and have other handles I want to do.
I see your delimma those knots are all beautiful. On the bright side you can't go wrong with any of them.
So far just for my own den. I buy handles I like at the antique store, as long as the price it right. I've thought about turning some around and selling them, but I know there are a couple other members here that do so much better work.
I've found the knots I've bought before are good. They all have broke in nicely. I do need to set the PB and BB a little deeper this time though. The first ones I did, while soft, are a bit floppy. While the part numbers are different, I think I got the same ones again this time, I hope. For now I also am keeping them under $20/knot. Once I get more experience and knowledge about quality, then I may splurge on a higher level knot. For now, I've got the handles cleaned out and sanded smooth.
Ive got one which I didn't set deep enough and ended up floppy. All part of the learning process. I really enjoy restoring brushes and giving them a second life.
