My fairly new WSP silvertip brush ( about 6 weeks old ) has started to clump up on the end and get stiff. After rinsing again before lathering up it is fine. I have a Pure Badger that has never done that. Am I doing something wrong when I rinse the silvertip. I always rinse 3 0r 4 times and shake it out well and hang it upside down on the stand. Should I be using hair conditioner once in a while on it to keep it soft?
Sounds like it needs a cleaning. Try using some shampoo and scrubbing the snot out if the knot. There's no reason to clean a silvertip this early on and it should only need a thorough rinsing after use.
Thanks for the cleaning tutorial. I have seen 20 Mule Team Boraxo in one of our grocery stores here. I hate to buy a huge box, but it is probably pretty inexpensive.
Borax is cheap, I think I paid a whopping $3 for my big box that will clean brushes for about 10 years.
If you don't want to buy Borax then you can probably use something you already have at home; white vinegar. Make about a 50/50 solution with water and then just dunk the brush in and mix it around some.
I have a WSP Silver tip too. At leats that's what I think it is. Bought a custom brush from Elite Razors and the WSP site says he uses their knots. I had a similar experience. I cleaned it with vinegar and water. Seemed to help a little. This knot still sheds about 2 hairs a shave and 2-3 in between shaves if I'm messing with it. Drive me crazy. Side note: I keep my brushes at my computer desk, often pick a brush up and stroke my hand through the tips of the hairs. Yeah I'm obsessed.
From what I've read Elite Razor uses knots from TGN, shavemac, & WSP. I'd presume due to cost that if it didn't specify or you didn't request a WSP knot then it is probably a TGN.
Some knots just dry stiff run your hand over it and see if it unclumps and goes back to soft. I have a couple that do this no defect just hair differences. Still soft wet. Just dry kind of crusty.
I don't really think its a cleaning problem but you can give it a try. You wash a brush with soap every use, rinsing in warm water should take care of residue
Depends on how stiff it really is though with clumping. If it's a WSP Superfine it may be hooked tips which are no big deal whatseover.
