Very sad. And as a former scientist, fascinating. For those who don't know, Dobermans as a breed are susceptible to narcolepsy. It's a recessive trait that has been exploited by scientists to better understand the genetic causes of the disease. They've even developed tests to identify individual dogs that might pass on the trait to their offspring.
