I have been just piling all of my shaving items around the sink and had run completely out of room. I decided that it was time to get organized. This past Saturday, my son and I embarked on building a recessed shelf in the bathroom next to my sink. The shelf needed to fit right here: After a little work, this is what we came up with: The photo was taken just after painting, so I was waiting for the paint to dry. Overall, I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. The best thing, though, is that I got to spend the day with my son (16 years old) working on this project. All in all a great day!
Haha! Just slightly. The dimensions of the box are 16" X 24 X 3.5"". My hope was to slide it between two studs. Here's what the wall looked like when we opened it up:
Great solution! The recessed cabinet is a fantastic, practical way to gain space without intrusion into the living space. Your trim work really gives the space an elegant look! I look forward to seeing the pics with it full of shaving goodies! When I redid our master bathroom a few years ago, I replaced the externally mounted old medicine cabinet (cheesy looking & extended out over the vanity) with a larger, deeper mirrored cabinet that would be flush against the wall. I also removed another old medicine cabinet & patched the opening, which was similar to the cut out you made for your space. Like you, my intent was have a nice practical 'hidden' space for all my shaving stuff in order to maintain domestic harmony and de-clutter the vanity I share with my wife. Fast-forward— it came out great! But, lo and behold, the majority of space in that cabinet has now been taken over by my spouse's collection of makeup, lotions, etc.. I have now since hung two bronze shelving units on another wall that contain a good deal of my stuff... Hole in the bathroom wall... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/GuitarPix/hole_inwall_zps32859500.jpg The finished project...with the mirrored cabinet that was to be mine... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/GuitarPix/cabntinplace_zps6d65d48a.jpg
That looks great! I don't think I have to worry about my wife taking it over. It's too far away from her sink for her to want to use it.
A new place to store your shaving loot AND working on the project with your son.... It doesn't get any better than that! Congrats to you both on a job well done.
