Hello all, I have been using AOS shaving products and they have been an absolute godsend for my sensitive skin, it has made shaving great. In a quest to find cheaper blades, I tried Dollar Shave Club and ShaveMob razors. The quality varied too much from blade to blade and was not impressed. I never had cuts before using the cheap blades, and had good success with my trusty old Fusion blades before. I have toyed with the idea of going the DE safety razor route for a while, since I have been into wet shaving for a while now. I purchased a Merkur SV-05X and so far I am not having the best luck. I have a sampler pack on the way, but I really need to further my technique, as I am pretty irritated around the neck area especially. I think this is mainly due to multiple passes. I am also wondering if this is an ok first safety razor. I actually want to buy a second due to me needing one for my travel bag. The Baxter of California razor has my eye, would this be a good razor, or is it too harsh for a newb?

    Thanks!

Congratulations on your DE razor and welcome. Don't worry about your neck that has been a difficult area for me and what I have read on these shaving forums for many others. Don't be afraid of experimenting with razors and blades. My only advice on buying razors is ask around for used one or check eBay before buying razors you may end up not liking

The only way you'll know if a particular razor, or blade, or soap, or brush, or combinations of all of the components will work is to try them yourself.

Welcome. It's not because of the passes it's because you're using pressure. We've all been there. Anyways I reecomend a GEM Push Button or Junior or a Schick Injector (I-type or later). SEs have a smaller angle that is less sensitive to pressure. For me they are much more comfortable to use on my sensitive skin and have a much better designed loading mechanism. Also I find I only need 2 passes with SEs.

Welcome aboard! I found the Muhle R89 loaded with a Feather blade to be a great starter. I ended up giving it to the wife, as she fell in love with it after I suggested she "try" it on her legs. However, you know what they say..."Happy wife...Happy life" lol.

Welcome, nice to have you here.

From what I've heard, the Baxter razor is an overpriced Merkur.

I'd go with a Tech. This could also be an issue of too much pressure and/or to many passes. It could also be improper prep or improper technique. What helped me a lot was not stretching my skin. If you do that then stop. Witch Hazel is also good for razor burn, etc.
