I just received a Gillette slim that I purchased on eBay. I cleaned it up and it looks really nice, but there is a problem. One side always seems to be off from the other no matter what setting I have it on. The pictures I took are on nine. Is there anything I can do to remedy this problem. I don't even want to try it out yet which is very disappointing.
It certainly looks like it needs to be un-slanted, but it doesn't look too bad. I'd say it can probably be straightened. I would take some really good pictures, contact one the restorers, and see if they could straighten it for you. Or, maybe you are the adventurous type and would like to give it a go on your own? There are several good vids on YouTube that can show you how to disassemble it.
I purchased a slim that was about that bad. I did a lot of research on line and realized restoring was more than what the razor was worth. Other folks suggested prying on the comb with a flat blade screwdriver. The didn't work in my case and I thought I would give it up. Someone suggested dulling a DE blade and installing it. Then setting it to #1, #5 and 9 and measuring the blade gap with a set of flat feeler gauges. Then set it to 9 and close down the doors. place the edge of the razor comb on a square table top and press down to bend it back to square. It took a few tries before I trued up the razor but I did bend it back to good working order. You might try it. At worse you will tear it up and not be out much.
I dove down a YouTube rabbit hole recently and watched quite a few vids on disassembly of the various Gillette razors. It isn't difficult. Search "captain murphy"(?) and watch. Otherwise I think Razor emporium does a tune up for a decent price.
Captain Murphy actually replied on Badger and Blade and showed me what to do. Just had to apply up pressure with thumb on side that was small and down pressure on the side with the bigger gap. Seems to have done the job. He said it was most likely caused by being dropped.
I believe the honorable action would for the seller to refund your money, unless the razor was advertised and pictured in this condition. IMHO, that is a more than minor ding. Thanks, Ed
Actually it is buyer beware. I should know better than to buy a razor from someone who doesn't know anything about razors. He actually stated this in his post.
I am still working on it. It has definitely moved, but not enough for me to want to try it. I may have to bend the bars too.
Well I worked in it some more last night and got it where it looks pretty good. Tried it out this morning on 5 and it did a nice job.
