Hello, all! My name is Alex and I'm from eastern North Carolina. I started my journey a few weeks ago with a new Dovo and a boar brush. Since then I've loaded up on 7 different soaps, 2 brushes, an old Kropp razor, and a couple strops. Its already been quite an enjoyable journey. My next step is to pick up a whole suite of Arks and get my honing game down. I've got a great write up of my first shave on a few of the other forums, but I'd be happy to share it here if I may. Thanks, and I look forward to enjoying this journey with everyone. Alex Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
Welcome to straights. You'll find there are many ways to skin a cat regarding honing progressions. Perhaps you have experience with knives and maybe not. Doesn't really matter. I've been using a straight razor since July of '18. A good friend got me started on honing and my first attempt was a pleasant surprise. I'll offer a couple useful videos.
Thanks, Chuck! I am a knife and flashaholic, but new to high precision honing. I purchased a set of lapping film and have been honing with that, but it's just not "cutting" it. So forward my journey goes. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
You'll get a lot of great advice on here, but be patient. I actually feel that getting something like a Gold Dollar to practice honing is a good idea. Save your vintage razor for when you have figured it out. I just learned to hone in the last year. I got almost there so many times and then blunted or dinged the edge. It doesn't take much to screw it up which is why its so difficult. I will leave further advice to those much more experienced than me, but please practice on something other than a vintage blade.
Welcome! Good to see another North Carolinian on here! How far east? I'm about 30 min north of Charlotte.
