    Hello All,

I decided to finally take the step towards a better shave. I recently purchased an Edwin Jagger DE89bl that comes with derby blades, a Tweezerman Shave Brush, and a stand to complete the deal. I have already been using the truefitt & hill 1805 shave cream. They all arrived today so i am very anxious to try out my new equipment. I have watched and read several videos and articles and feel pretty confident about how to get through my first shave. But i'm still a bit nervous to be completely honest. The one thing i'm not very sure about is what should i do with my new equipment before i shave. Should i clean it or prep it in any way or just go at it? I have tried to find the answer to this but cant find one. Any help would be much appreciated.

    First, welcome to the Den!

A new out-of-the-box razor I wouldn't worry about. The brush, just whip up a quick practice lather, rinse it out real good, and then go for it!
Looks like you have some great stuff to start with.

Hi Omar, I just barely got my equipment a day or two ago. I had a job interview this morning, so I hesitated to try wet-shaving for the very first time before walking into an interview! "Oh these? Battle scars from how hard I work, sir!" Now that the interview is behind me, my hardware and I are casting knowing glances at one another. I think it's time...

    Welcome aboard, Omar.

Welcome! Nothing to be nervous about..it's just another way of shaving. One extra tip..without over tightening, just make sure the handle's turned all the way after the blade is on board. I put a dab of Vaseline on the screw section of my razor caps to help fully tighten and protect that section of the razor which can be delicate...

Welcome to The Shave Den-always good to have more Chicago folk here! I agree, nothing to clean or prepare, just do it. 1805 is one of my absolute favorites-you're not going to move up on the quality, but if you're anything like me (and most of us) you'll appreciate the variety when you inevitably move on to other products. Enjoy and don't hesitate to use us as a resource. We love to share our experience. Go Bears, Hawks, Sox, Cubs, Bulls!!

I agree with Steve. No issues with new stuff. Vintage (used) equipment is where the clean up is more of an issue.
Get a sampler pack of blades if you did not get one when you made your purchase.

Now, here is the advice section. It was given to me when I started traditional shaving and it served me well so I freely give it to others.

I call it the 30 day rule. Find a razor, then a blade that will not cause issues with your face (that may take a few different blades in a sampler to find a suitable choice or it maybe the first out of the gate) and select a soap or cream that is easy to generate good lather. Once you find those, spend 30 days using nothing else until you build up your technique. After 30 days, change one and only one variable and work for another week. At that point you should be able to make better decisions because your technique is now in place.

    Oh and one more thing...

    Welcome to the Den.

We know you'll fit right in.

So grab yourself a comfy chair,

I completed my shave today. It was a bit nerve wreaking I was really taking my time. I did 3 passes with no major cuts. The hardest part was my upper lip (very corse hair) and chin. The shave was not very close but I expected that. Thanks for all your ideas. I look forward to getting better and sharing my experience.

Yeah as mentioned no problem with the new stuff, if you have a boar brush, there is a breaking in period (and a few weeks for the pig smell to subside) thats the only real issue with new stuff, welcome to the shave den and good luck.

Welcome to the Den!! Great start and don't worry if a few of your next shaves get a little worse there is a learning curve, however since you shave so often it gets better pretty quickly. And remember no pressure and take your time.

This company is in Turkey but their primary market is the U.S. and Europe. Great company and good products but do not expect quick shipping due to the Turkish postal system.
