Hello, didn't know there was websites/forums about shaving! not even sure how I found it :/ I'm 22 as of Tuesday and dont really shave often/ever.... Mainly because when i do a few hours later I come out in a rash little white spots and redness for about a week or so! Gets quite painful and looks horrible so I tend to just trim my facial hair very short. any tips would be great! a quick browse took me to a page with this youtube clip on that got me thinking I could give this ago? should I shouldn't I? and where is the best place to get the kit? Thanks, Callum
Welcome, nice to have you. There is a wealth of info here and you should have no problem finding what you want. Check out Connaught shaving, Italian Barber, West Coast Shaving, or Bullgoose shaving for kits and what not. Good luck, don't hesitate to ask if you need help.
There are actually quite a few shaving related forums and web sites, but The Shave Den is the best one. Friendly, knowledgeable folks and lots of helpful articles and threads. The major differences between the shaves of the uninitiated and us hard core traditional wet shavers are that wet shavers are dedicated to good prep, quality products, and a focus on technique. If you prep well (hot shower, a thorough water splash, maybe a preshave product, a soaked brush, and clean skin), use quality soaps and creams (rather than cheap canned foams and gels), and focus on how you use the gear that you have then I guarantee that your shaves will improve. You do not need high priced gear to do well, you just need a little effort and an understanding of what makes a good shaving product. One of the vendors based in the UK that I use quite often is Connaught Shaving. Great prices, fast delivery, and interesting products: http://www.connaughtshaving.com/index.html Amazon UK also has quite a few good deals on shaving gear. Beyond those two sources I can't offer much in the way of UK based vendors. I rarely buy from folks outside of the USA as I am impatient...Connaught Shaving is the one exception. As far as good low cost gear to try in you neck of the woods...Palmolive sticks and cream, as I understand it, are often available in grocery stores for less than £1 and work well. Either the Lord L5 or the Lord L6 razor is extremely inexpensive, works well, and is often for sale on eBay, Amazon, and a few other on line vendors (including Connaught Shaving). Try out a few things, see what works and what doesn't, and ask lots of questions...oh, and welcome to The Shave Den.
When you buy a DE razor, go ahead and buy a sampler pack of blades. That's the best way to find a blade that works for you instead of buying a ton of blades that you find don't work out for you. Although I have never used either of these razors, I hear Merkur (German) and Edwin Jagger (British) are great razors to start out on. There are options out there, you just have to go with what interests you most.
http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...having-starter-kits-luxury-shaving-cream.html is this a good start or would I be best of buying them all individually?
Hi! Welcome to the Den. Be sure to sign up for the June Newbie Give-Away. That looks like a good starter kit, but I'd price around to see if you might find a better deal with individual purchases.
Welcome to TSD! By razor bumps, do you mean ingrown hairs? If so, there's some good advice around here but I don't really have that problem so I won't offer any advice on it. I did have a problem with red spots on my neck at first. For me that was irritation from scraping the blade at too high an angle and using a little pressure. Once I got used to keeping the blade angle lower and learned to use a lighter touch, that problem went away. Now I get incredibly comfortable, close shaves. I think if you stick with it for a while you will too.
Hi there welcome to TSD. Im also UK based (Merseyside). A good starting point would be an Edwin jagger razor (can be bought from amazon) http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...ords=edwin jagger razor&sprefix=edwin,aps,586 The 2nd razor listed is slightly more expensive as it has a lined handle but for me its worth the extra £2 Omega Pro shave brush http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...mega+shave+brush&rh=i:aps,k:omega+shave+brush It is a great brush large knot and feels great, (Once the pig smell has gone from the boar bristle, this may take a few lathering sessions to sort out, but its worth the time.) And for razor blades Connaught shaving's sampler pack, as different blades suit different people. http://connaughtshaving.com/samplepack.html As so soap/cream's etc I use Palmolive shave sticks they are very good and only 50p!!!! from Tesco or Wilkinsons.
Welcome! I recommend mantic57's Youtube Channel for some good practical advice and tutorials on DE shaving.
to TSD Callum.........I hope you enjoy it here...... EJ89 or a Lord if you need to save some money, a large blade sample pack, a good inexpensive, locally available soap like Palmolive and a decent inexpensive brush (I personally like and use the #6 horse from bestshave). Some nice preshave like Proraso(I use Corn Huskers Lotion, but you may not have it in the UK)..An after shave of your choice and your ready to rock and roll!! Good Technique is actually I.M.O. more important than equipment and that just takes time...The key to a good shave for me is Time,Technique,Practice and Patience....I think you'll be able to get rid of those irritations and begin to enjoy shaving as much as we all do....
Welcome! Didn't have time to read all the replies but I had the same problem with the bumps!! I started using a DE, only used it 5 times. The first 2 times were just s bad as my old razor just cheaper, but the last three times, I was able to shave two days in a row (after taking some advice from these guys) and bumps almost gone!! Buy the way, I never shaved two days in a row, I feel my face is going through a renaissance!!
