I was following the progress of this auction (last I saw it was hovering around the $180 make—which seemed in the realm of sanity)—but I suppose somebody REALLY wanted this big old Greaves……
I wonder if the seller had any clue it would go that high... Must have been a bidding war or something.
Would have been a sweet deal at $180...I think two things drove the price: 1) Mass. Consistent with the current "straights by the pound" Flavor of the Week. Not denigrating here, I'm susceptible as well . 2) "Greaves" on the tang. People who like Greaves', really like Greaves'. Guilty again ^2. $500 is pretty high none the less. I agree with JR on this; A "Perfect Storm" of bidders, methinks.
Some potentially deep pitting on the blade. Unique size. I'd have gone high as $220…but $500 is a bit of an overpay.
Yeah as Mike as already stated people who like Greaves really like Greaves me to I've been searching for a minty Greaves for quite sometime, still 500 dollars is a lot of bucks for that razor. PS I can see these big Greaves choppers overtaking the Wade & Butcher FBU in the heavyweight division I predict a big price hike coming.
I have my Greaves in the 'restore queue'— its not a big chopper, but still a unique 3/4"+ piece of Sheffield history. I think you're on to something, Jamie, about the Greaves supplanting those W&B FBU monsters as far as the 'next BIG thing' in razor acquisitions.
Just finished polishing out a Greaves just like the one in the OP and a smaller 7/8 hehehe sounds funny saying a "Smaller" 7/8 The scales were a Wood and Horn hodge-podge but the blade is the same, big ole' honking hunk of Sheffield steel Will post pics when both are done LOL just had to see I was thinking it was closing in on 1/4 lb of steel but not quite only 3.1 oz
Nice looking 'little' Greaves blade there, Glen! Heres a couple of detail shots of the blade from the $500 auction...
I can't believe that ebay one went so high either, was fun to watch though! I was game to bid on it until it broke $225. I was hoping it would make a nice match for the one Glen is working on, Which i am excited about Glen, i can't wait to shave with that beast. What was odd to me on the ebay one was that $500 was bid by two bidders if you look at the history... how does that happen? shouldn't one of them have had to go over $500? well it looks like the winning $500 bid was placed 2 seconds prior to the other $500 bid so maybe the loosing one was just logged for posterity Jon
At $500.00 the second bid would have had to have been $510.00 or more to win. $508.00 would have shown and lost as well if it was two seconds late.
