hmmmm.... This thread got me thinking.... I have an old puck of Colgate's Barber Shaving Soap I found at an antique mall a couple years ago. May have to give it a go. Any thoughts/comments from those who have used it?
I found one awhile back in a wood bowl for $4 at an antique store, but haven't used it yet because I'm currently using one each of the Colgate Cup and Mug soaps, both of which I like a lot. It's tempting but I'm going to hold off until I knock a dent in them. Unless you want to keep it as a collectors item I'd say use it.
Oh, I'll use it. Can't take it with me. Since it's even smaller in diameter than the Old Spice mugs I have, I'll probably grate up and pack it down into one of those mugs.
I'm still kicking myself, a l lb pristine pack of the Colgate Barbers soap sold on ebay for $31 + $10 shipping about a week back. I was gonna bid then told myself to be self disciplined and pass , then regretted not getting it. Jeff sent a vintage Williams puck and that tallow lather is nice , I may pick up a few vintage pucks, Colgate among 'em.
I used to love Colgate when I could still get it new back in the early 90's. I loved it! I would love to stumble on some NOS Colgate somewhere now. Good stuff!
I have one puck of the "Cup Soap" variety of Colgate, which seems to be a tallowy concoction similar to vintage Williams. I'm glad to have tried it, but probably would not pay $7 for it again. It works very well, just not unbelievably well. I've assumed that it's similar to the product sold as Barber soap, but don't really know that. It's definitely richer than the later Colgate product sold as "Mug Soap", not that the Mug Soap is bad. I did recently pay a bit more than that for a vintage Colgate shave stick, and plan to get to it in due course.
I dunno, I don't think I could do it. To me using an old puck of shaving soap bought at an antiques mall would feel like wearing briefs purchased at Goodwill.
I've been using the same vintage puck of colgate almost daily for over four months now. I can't remember which is the newer kind- cup or mug- but it's an earlier form of the newer kind. Hope that makes sense. I've gotten wonderful shaves with it. Moral of the story is that I say you should use it- I think you'll enjoy it. And if for whatever reason you decide you don't want it, I'll buy it off you.
It's not like the soap had been used. So it's been grated and pressed into an Old Spice mug. I put about a table spoon of water on the top, let it sit for a minute or two, then just used a finger to smooth the top and make sure it was pressed down good and tight. Poured off the water that didn't soak in; all ready for tomorrow's shave.
It's not the same at all, unless the briefs at Goodwill are new, unused and still in their original package. And if they are, what's the problem?
You thought correctly. I used it this morning. Lathered up easily enough; nice, thick lather. Provided very nice cushion and glide. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the scent - NONE! Well, okay, maybe a very slight soap smell. The reason I have so many different soaps is because part of what I enjoy about the shave is the aroma-therapy. This soap will be a candidate for a few drops of cologne or Em's Woodstock EO in the lather bowl next time I whip it up. Bottom line - no regrets. I'll buy more if I come across any.
I have over a dozen pucks of vintage Williams, and five of Colgate, none have any scent other than a faint soap smell. Glad to hear you liked it. Williams, Colgate/Palmolive and Old Spice were battling each other for the consumers dollars back then, plus, canned cream was becoming popular so they had to make a good product to be competitive. We're lucky that some is still around for us that missed it the first time around to enjoy now.
The Vintage Soap can always find a home on my face...The Goodwill briefs,....will have to find a home on someone else's face...
Just finished shaving with Colgate Cup, an M3 Schick adjustable and a Chines Schick blade. Resisited the urge to put a pair of briefs on my face and dance around the house singing "I Feel Pretty".
No scent to these old pucks is just excuse to put on extra cologne or AS! We should start an "Old Puck of..." section. Thanks for the inspiration to try out my old puck of Palmolive.
