Having just returned from a 2-day getaway with my wife up to the California Gold Country, I wanted to share with you all a pretty cool little barber shop located on the main street near where we stayed in Grass Valley. The Shop is called, Gentleman's Quarters, located in the heart of old town. The appearance of the shop is very much as one would expect in an 'old school' barber shop—large paned glass windows framed in brick. All that was really missing was a large barber's pole (aside from the image on the sign)... The shop offers straight razor shave and haircuts. Unfortunately, the shop wasn't opened at the time I was there—most of the morning are by appointment only. The only shot of the inside is from the Yelp page. Love the look of the old green chair... What got my attention initially was the window display: All kinds of vintage shaving paraphernalia stacked on a three shelf display. plenty of other old tonic bottles and assorted relics. very cool… I wish i had the chance to talk with the owner. Maybe next time. I'm in no hurry to have someone else give me a straight razor shave (most of the experiences I've read on forums from those who have found barber shop shaves disappointing), but I'd like to chat with the guy on the 'art' he practices.
Looks like a great shop. My barber has an old chair like that, antique wooden furniture, hand carved barber's poles that look extremely old, and some vintage shaving stuff. But, it's all for display. He doesn't do shaves anymore.
Nice shop. Finding a barber that still uses a real barber chair instead of a salon chair is getting hard to find.
The last few times I've passed through town, the shop wasn't open… He may be one of those 'appointment only' businesses. Still would like to chat him up….
If I get up north, I will definitely make that a "must see" place on my itinerary. Thanks Kevin for sharing
