If you had to be totally utilitarian and limit yourself to one razor, one brush and one soap or cream what would your picks be? I'm not talking about trying to do inexpensively necessarily, it's your pick. What could you use daily and be happy?
Difficult. each razor, soap/cream and brush has its own merits. But if I really have to choose: Razor: Rolls Razor Soap: De Vergulde Hand - or Tabac. Can choose there! Brush: my old -at least 1980's or earlier De Vergulde Hand boar. Lotsa backbone, yet really soft. Excellent for both bowl and face lathering.
The easy part for me would be the brush, I'd take one of my homemade boars. If that wouldn't be a consideration because it's homemade, I'd be pretty happy with any of the big Omegas as long as the knot is at least 25mm. The razor would be my Friodur. Soap is my hardest choice. I'd take vintage Williams (menthol) and never look back but it's not really practical because it's not available anymore and I would not choose the modern version even if it had menthol in it. So for soap it would be one of the great artisan types, Catie's Bubbles Menta Terrosa. 1) Friodur 2) any big Omega 3) Catie's Bubbles
extreme limits hot water wash with nivea men's whipped dog silver tip c.o. bigelow (proraso green) granddad's Gillette super speed persona labs virgin island bay rum if I could only have one
Razor = Iwasaki Kamisori Brush = Restored Old Spice w/ 24mm Overstuffed Silvertip Creme = Crabtree & Evelyn "Sweet Almond Oil" Easy as pie to choose hehehe
Razor: If blades aren't an issue, the Gillette Ranger Tech. You know that one razor you try that gives you that magically best shave like nothing else? That was the Ranger. Otherwise, the Rolls. Soap: No real preference. I can get by with bar soap but I have become partial to this. Brush: A long Adoration handle; don't really care if it's boar or stiffer badger. But if I'm using the shave butter, I just smear it on and don't need a brush.
Razor: Gillette Slim Brush: Omega Pro 48 Soap: TSD Lanolin I could shave the rest of my life with those three Dave
I assume by 'one razor' you imply one 'straight razor'—since this is in the 'Straight razor' section. Razor: Beau Brummel 5/8 (but this could quickly change…) Brush: Lijun Silvertip 30mm+ Soap: Martin de Candre Fougére
By all means, everyone is welcome, DE, SE and straights, etc. I posted here out of habit. I'm really ignorant about the other stuff. After I found the shaving forums I tried (bought) a few different DE and SE razors but I was already into straights and decide to keep life simple. (from a purchasing stand point)
Razor: slim adjustable Brush: Whipped Dog silvertip 20 mm set deep Soap: Provence Sante (The soap choice is conditional because I haven't yet tried L'Occitane Cade or MDC)
If limited to one of each, I could be content with the following. Gillette LC New on a Weber Bulldog. Semogue Barbear Classico Mistura Synergy Bay Rum I would hate to be limited to one of each, but the little Semogue mixed knot is one heck of a brush and would be my pick right now. The LC New with the added weight and grip of the Weber Bulldog handle makes for a fantastic shaver. I am pretty easy when it comes to soaps and could be happy with any number of soaps. The Synergy is as good as any. At first I felt it was a little heavily scented but have grown accustomed to it. The performance is great. I wish they would offer a rose scent or some other choices. I have to thank Steve for sending me a puck to try. It is not likely that I would have picked it up on my own.
Gillette New Crabtree & Evelyn Nomad Cream TGN Finest 26mm I clearly chose these. So If I can make this selections, I should empty my den ASAP
If I had to pick one then here's my lineup razor Filarmonica 14 Especial 8/8 brush Simpsons P8 soap Boellis Panama 1924.
I see that alot. folks are just naturally drawn toward the straight section of this forum. resistance is futile
