I used only a 1970 Gillette black handle SS for years. Of course that was before I joined this forum...
We all start somewhere—usually with a single razor. When I first started with a DE razor many moons ago, I owned for years one razor, one brush and one tube of cream. Fast forward 35+years, I have since allowed myself the privilege and indulgence of owning more than one razor (or one brush, one soap, etc.), with no regrets nor apologies.
I don't have just one but if I had to, I could do so...but right now I can't imagine being without 1 DE, 1 SE and 1 Trac II. An injector I can live without.
I don't have many, but I could live with just one or two. You always need a back-up in case you drop and break the razor 30 mins before you need to be at work.
I found one razor to rule them all - the Weber PH SS Bulldog. But for sentimental values and pure history I have a drawer full of vintage razors that I enjoy just as much on different occasions. I could do without them, but I can't bring myself to parting with them.
We are a nation of indulgence. The more we make the ability to buy toys is great, for those of you who are involved with no buy July I have one question to ask how many of use can clean out our den and for 1 month shave with one razor, one brand of blade, soap or cream and aftershave and maybe reflect on all the things we actually need to survive.
I have done this for years. I used a Gillette Mach 3 and a can of Barbasol SC for the better part of a decade. Before that I used a puck of Williams. Now I have a few different razors and brushes and enjoy a rotation of gear. It keeps it interesting and isn't causing me any harm. It is keeping the mundane task of shaving from reverting back in to a painful chore to be avoided. I could easily go back to use a single razor blade etc, but don't see any reason for me to do so.
For almost 40 years I had horrible shaves. Often missing a day just because of the lousy gear I was using. I have a great variety of shaving gear, I could never use the same setup for a month. No need.
I may be wrong but I think the fellas have tried going a month as you've described, just to see how it went.
The only reason is to reflect on America's over indulgence in our lives, kinda like if u don't use it in a 6 month period do you really need it,it could be a 3rd TV,OR laptop or cellphone. This summer I have been going to estate sales and it really opened my eyes.
Yep, same here. And Norelco wet/dry for 18 months after that, and now this. So, most of my life has been 1 razor, 1 can of foam. I get your point though. The older I get, the more simplistic my living becomes. Studying Buddhism also has caused a drop off of wants. I've never been much of a consumer, but about the only thing I spend extra on now are clothes and hygiene type things, which shaving falls under.
I've only been at the wet shaving game for about 35 years, but only with a DE for the last 6 or 7 months (outside of the first couple of years). I basically used an Atra for most of those 30+ years. Now that I've seen the light, I'm a bit astounded at how many razors I've gone through in the search for "the one". I am ready to settle down and to paraphrase Mr. Shaverman, be a bit more simple.
