I still consider myself a newbie. I read some decent reviews about the Merkur 1904, and ordered one. I accidentally ordered the Open Comb version. What is the technical difference?

Open combs do not have a safety bar across the front; they have teeth. Some consider open combs more aggressive. However, while I don't have a Merkur open comb, I have several others and the Gillette NEW, which is open comb, is my favorite. Take your shave slowly, and with a good blade and proper technique, you should get an excellent shave. Enjoy! ;)

Yep :) Don't worry too much. Just be careful and you'll master the use of the razor. Have patience and don't give up if you get some little cuts :)

Don't feel like you made a mistake.

That doesn't mean is less effective with short beard, only that is more effective with long beard and works as good as one with a safety bar
