I want to purchase an open comb razor never shaved with one, what do you think would be the best to buy medium to aggressive?
I hear the fatip grande is pretty aggressive. I have been resisting ordering one for a month now. Must fight the RAD! The Phoenix DOC has good reviews, reportedly mild but efficient. There's a recent thread on that razor. Good luck.
RazoRock Bamboozled RAKE is, in my experience, a great middle-of-the-road (not as mild as a 41c, not as aggressive as a Fatip) OC shaver.
All the above are great suggestions. If you want a vintage razor, you might consider a Gillette New Long Comb or Short Comb. While not overly aggressive, I have found them to be very efficient.
I just pulled the trigger yesterday on a NEW SC. It's coming from Europe so I will have a longer than normal wait to satisfy my RAD. Based on the good reviews this baby will proably displace one of the 7 I have in rotation.
I'm a vintage guy, so I woould like to also recommend the Gillette new. The standard long or short comb razors are great. Also if you want to try a new varient, the English made Gillette New Raised Flat Bottom varient is very smooth and efficient. However , they don't come up for sale too often on eBay USA. You have better luck finding them on eBay UK. Good luck in whatever you decide, and enjoy your journey through the traditional wet shaving Kingdome.
All Merkur open combs do have the same head geometry. 11C would shave as 15C which shaves like 25C. Only the handle is different. All Merkur open combs are ridiculously mild. They are not the tool for BBS, but still will handle a huge growth very easily.
I've got a Maggards OC with both the MR-8, and MR-22 handles. It's a mild shaver, but I always get a smooth irritation free shave from it. I bought the $10.99 OC head, and both handles are from their clearance discount items and were priced at $13 apiece. You can have a great razor for under $25 shipped conus. Clayton
All of the above are great recommendations. We're just wrapping up Open Comb OCtober here. I have a new found love now for Gillette New long comb razors. They're excellent shavers and can be used every day. The prices are low and there are many out there in like new condition.
Because it is fairly small-handled, it is somewhat light. If I remember correctly, it's heavier than some larger DE razors, though; I believe it's got more weight than the Schick Krona, as well as some others, primarily Bakelite and related materials.
I really enjoy my old type and milady decolette. They have the same head but the old type handle is twice as long as the decolette handle both older brass razors with hollow ball end handles. I can get a BBS or DFS+ every time with either of these and a sharp blade. I got them both on eBay for less then $20 together after shipping. The old type came with a case.
I have an 1920s old type OC that I really like I will be using it to finish out the last week of OC October.I paid $10.00 For it at an antique store.
My go-to razor is the Cooper MonoBilt (also called a 'flip top') it's the finest open comb razor money can buy, if you can find one. It's both mild and efficient. Not something that can be said for most razors. It will give me a one pass + touchups shave everyday. That being said, the PAA double open comb is a nice razor as well, once I got past the fact that it's both chrome plated and the head is made of pot metal (Zamak). If PAA would make it entirely of brass and nickel plate it, I'd buy it at any price (below $100 ). As it is, it's a good value for the money.
They seem to crop up here even less often (even those with bent teeth) than on Ebay.com, I'm on the lookout for one myself. Regards, Chris
