Hello Gents, I was recently at a local pawn shop just browsing around. I asked the clerk if they had any old razors. He said he didn't think so, but one of the older guys who has worked there a while went into the back and came out with a small box with several items inside. When he set down the box I was excited to see on the very top a Gillette Slim Adjustable in a case in good shape (besides being full of someone else's hair), a Schick Injector, an old Gillette open comb of some sort, Durham duplex straight, a Galvanic Straight, some sort of cheaply made disposable straight with the name Radio on it, an old pocket knife, a pencil with the Lord's Prayer on it, and a pen from a bank. I was really excited about the de razors, but I was going to pass on the rest. The clerk told me he would sell me everything for $12.00. I walked out with the whole box, but all I really wanted were the des. Any thoughts of the value of the rest of the stuff? I've never owned a "real" straight and I have no idea if it is even salvageable as it has some pretty serious rust growing on it. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!
hello and nice haul. if you don't have use of that radio thing, it's be interested in it. I want to see if it can hold a rolls razor blade. for the purpose of honing ands stropping it on other equipment.
I know nothing about straights as I have only shaved with Feather Artist kamisori style shavettes. Is it a pretty big investment to get into straights? I'd love to see this vintage one restored, but not really sure if I want to throw lots of dinero at it.
Thank you! I never ventured into vintage territory until a few weeks back when I came across a Slim at an antique show. After shaving with it and being very impressed, I've kept my eyes open for a back up. What did curiosity do to the cat again
@HolyRollah, any idea on the Cattaraugus? I know Cattaraugus is an American razor from a compmany associated with the Case family out of Little Valley, NY. I love the shape of those scales, its a shame one is broken off. I don't know if the rust on the end is removable, or if the blade might have been plated. It doesn't appear to have a lot of hone wear, but that's all I can see.
I was able to clean the straight up with a Dremel and even managed a comfortable shave with it, but I'm afraid the investment to get it up to snuff may be quite high with buying strops, stones, etc. Not sure I want to put the funds into all the equipment.
That is about all I have found out about the brand. The rust cleaned off, but there is some pitting. Not to much, but enough to be a pain. There was a small patch of rust pretty close to the edge, but I was able to get it off with the Dremel. I think the blade is carbon steel.
Thank you! I was really most interested in the safety razors, but the straight is something special too. Something you don't appreciate until you hold one in your hands.
