Hello friends: My wife and I have gone to an ENT regarding our son's ears. The ENT told us he thought ear tubes and a tonsilectomy should be done ASAP. We like the ENT, but we also want another opinion. Any advice as far as how to approach this doc with records requests and the second-opinion doc so that we get an impartial opinion? Yours, Brandon
Easy...tell him you are going to get a second opinion and ask that the information be sent to the new doc. Most docs are understanding about this sort of thing. FWIW though, we went through this with my son years ago and having tubes in and adnoids removed was the best thing we ever did for him. Prior to tubes, etc, we were at the docs office about twice a month and had him on all kinds of antibiotics that he just became immune to. Afterwards, trips to the doc stopped until the tubes came out...ended up having it done 3 times over about a 4 year period.
There should be no hesitation to request a second opinion-if a doc can't understand that his/her skin is way to thin to be doing what he/she is doing. I'm an Internist and have had many patients over the years seeking second opinions. I approach this with respect and understanding. Any doc who cannot do that, especially when dealing with children, needs a new line of work.
