Lady Dapper is wanting to get me a new brush for Father's Day, I've been looking, but this picking a brush thing is a little intimidating with all of the brands and different model numbers it gets a bit overwhelming. I know I want a silvertip, but I don't wanna make a bad choice. What's your advice, gents?

This reaches your limit on Badger but this is a good deal if they are available. 37 Pound Sterling is about 63 USD.

Successor to the highly acclaimed New Forest 2201, this brush has a firm backbone much favored by shavers who like to face lather with soaps. The soft tips make it very comfortable on the face when used with circular scrubby motions. It's also fine with creams for face or bowl lathering.

The knot is 22mm, with a loft of 50mm and a handle height of 50mm.

Price is £37 including worldwide delivery.

The New Forest 2204 is a popular mid size choice. It it the same hair that is used in the Tubby 1 and Tubby 2 brushes, they have 24mm and 26mm knots respectively. The two band hair I use is the very best available and it's very popular among shavers who like to face lather with soaps. But it is equally effective with creams.

In addition Fram's suggestion of the Mühle STF V2 is also an excellent choice.

One more thing on the New Forest, it is a better brush for the price than other equivalent British made brushes in terms of size and hair used.

Consider one of Larry's Whipped Dog brushes. His Silvertips are fantastic and he is great to work with!

I bought a vie long horsehair just to try. It was 25. And it is a really nice brush to breakup the monotony of my badger brushes.

I have boar right now. I really want to try a silvertip badger brush. I keep hearing about how great they are. I will get a horse hair brush after that :p

After I got my Silvertip I rarely use my boars. My horse gives me an allergic reaction

Because there are countless brushes out there. I have pretty much sworn off anything new for a while myself.

Why? Because you are trying to pick a brush based on a given thought process (Silvertip desire) rather than what would best fit your user mode.

Here is how to determine your user mode.

    1. Do you want to face lather, bowl lather, or both?
    2. Do you want to have strong backbone, moderate backbone, or weak backbone?
    3. Do you want ultra soft tips, tips that are soft with slight scritch, tips with moderate scritch, or tips that ex-foliate strongly (close to stratch)?
    4. Do you want natural or synthetic?
    5. If you want natural do you want Badger, Boar or Horse?

Now please answer all five of these questions (unless you choose synthetic in question #4 then you can skip #5).

At that point we can better deal with what you really want in your price range through reasoning rather than haphazard guessing.
