Please help. Oil slick after shaving face

The area where I have oily skin is where I shave. That's it. I would say that I don't consider myself to have oily skin, but I have been getting a very oily face since I started shaving with soap, brush and de razor. It's become really, really bad, more so now it's hot.

Here's my evening routine: wash face with soap; warm face with washcloth; load up brush and shave, I do three passes, usually with either Palmolive shave soap or Barbasol Sensitive shave cream; rinse face; dry face. I never used to really bother with after shave but have discovered Old Spice splash, which I love.

About an hour after shaving, my face is shiny and super oily. It honestly feels, and looks, like I've just rubbed oil over my face. The more I wash the worse it gets. In the morning I throw water at my face and some splash - done. By the time the afternoon comes, my face is greasy. I've just rubbed the back of my had down my face. Seriously, it's greasy and I am getting loads of red spots, whiteheads (not razor burn) where I shave, this gets worse as I continue to shave that area. Can anyone see where I'm going wrong and help please, or recommend some products, perhaps. Thanks, really if you reply to this. Thank-you.

It almost sounds like it is the oils in the Old Spice that are causing the problem. You may want to try not using aftershave for a few days, if the problem persists, then you may want to not shave for a day or 2 because the red spots. Hope this helps, its the best advice I could think of, but I get those red spots too sometimes from too much blade to skin contact.

I wondered. In writing the above, I think it has forced me to confront this. Here's my plan: I'm going to use Barbasol sensitive only, for a few days and not use any aftershave balm or splash at all and see if that helps. If not, then I haven't got a plan B.

I suggest that you try a couple of things.
First, I suggest trying some witch hazel that has alcohol in it. This will help clean any oils off your skin, and, since it tends to dry the skin, should help with that "greasy after" feeling.

Second, I would try some Alum. Alum will tend to dry out the skin, which may solve the issue.

Try these BEFORE you use old spice.

@SHAVEWIZARD420 may be on to something with the Old Spice. If I may suggest, splash your face with Witch Hazel for your aftershave. The scent is gone in a matter of minutes. Get some OS cologne, dab a drop behind each ear and pull it down your neck along the jaw line. Maybe a dab on the nape of your neck. The cologne will last longer than the OS aftershave.

Old Spice does have some castor oil in it, just FYI. You may actually be drying the skin a bit with the shaves. A nice moisturizing post shave balm may help.

What kind of soap are you washing with? Maybe try a good Glycerin soap.

As others have mentioned, I would think, that if you rinse well with a witch hazel and then leave well enough alone, that should give you an idea of what is going on. It is a natural astringent, so absolutely should not contribute to the problem. It is also healing and soothing for sores or skin maladies. If I could only own one skin care/AS product, WH would be it. It is the ONLY constant in every single one of my shaves.

And somebody above mentioned alum. Nothing is going to dry you out better than that.

Usually oily skin is caused by the skin being too dry. Oil is produced to compensate for the dryness.

Try rubbing a little corn huskers lotion on after you shave, or switch to an aftershave balm rather than an aftershave splash.

For the last few days I have been shaving using Proraso Sensitve and cold water, which I read may help, no pre-shave, no after-shave, no lotions or potions. My skin is clearing up slowly; the spots are receding.

I've bought some Neutrogena razor protect daily face scrub. The reviews were mostly from people with oily skin. Seems good. Anyone use it? Also, some Clubman Pinaud shave talc, just to try. I like the look of the scented witch hazel at the TSD shop, and was going to order a few, with some soaps, m bomb etc. but the postage was more than the cost of the items. Shame. That witch hazel looks great.
I'll let you know how it all goes.
