After buying an Omega 10005 brush and some Proraso soap a couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon this forum. After much reading I decided I would give a DE razor a try. Initially, I was planning on buying a Lord L6 as I had read that it was a decent razor for the newbie. It was also the cheapest of the recommended razors that I could find on Amazon for about $12 Cdn. However, I also wanted a stand for said razor and brush which was going to run it up to almost $40. Found a Weishi razor and stand for the same price so decided to go with that. The main reason I chose the Weishi over the Lord is simply cause I dig the butterfly/TTO feature. The Weishi also came with Feather blades. From what I have read, the Feather blades may not be ideal for a beginner so I also ordered a sampler of 15 Gillette blades: 5 each of the 7 o'clock Super Stainless, Silver Blue and Platinum. So the question now becomes, which blade should I start with? Is one of these "milder" than the others?
Congrats on your first purpose! shaving will never be the same! Many folks here would recommend getting a DE blade sample pack as your choice in WHAT blade fits your face is quite subjective. Some blades feel 'less harsh' and some feel 'smoother'—again, all very subjective. Order a variety from the TSD shop. Part of the 'thrill' of the DE shave is finding the 'right' blade.
Congrats! I'm a newbie as well, and haven't had the opportunity to try any of those blades yet. I highly recommend the October 30 day focus forum. They have helped me tremendously and showed me what to concentrate on starting out. Welcome to the DE lifestyle!
I'm a member of a minority of users who recommend starting with Feather blades, especially in a razor as mild as the Weshei. It will teach you not to use pressure, which is a mistake that is hard to overcome, especially if it's not corrected as soon as you switch to wet shaving with a double edge razor.
Welcome to The Shave Den. Try a sample pack of assorted blades and decide which one(s) you like best.
Welcome @PanHead to the club. Now that you have made the leap you will never look back! You might want to enter, if you haven't already, the "Super Duper Newbie PIF". that will give you a shot at all sorts of new things for your DE journey
My advice is to first get a super small sampler to pick one working blade, then hone on your technique before trying more. The super small sampler I recommend is like this: Voskhod, Astra SP, either GSB (which you have) or PolSilver, either KAI or Feather (you already have Feather). All blades are listed in order of sharpness). This means you get 4 blade brands to try from different levels of sharpness. In your case, you only need to get Voskhod and Astra SP to have all 4 categories. You should not feel any tugging, so try to find the smoothest but not tugging blade from those. It is possible to nick oneself with any blade, but a too dull blade will be more dangerous as tugging, pulling, skips and jumps causes you to lose control over the razor, which you will try to compensate with pressure. A too sharp blade will give you some irritation if your technique is not good. Still it is more safe than a jumping and skipping razor blade. Begin with the sharpest and then go down until you find the balance between sharpness and smoothness.
Bunk. There is no "ideal" blade for a beginner. All blades are sharp and meant to cut, that's why we buy them. With any and all blades, go slow, pay attention to what you're doing, mind the pressure, and respect the blade. Doesn't matter what you start with. No such thing as a "mild" or "aggressive" blade. Granted, some are smoother than others, which some may perceive as mild, and some can be a bit rough, but that doesn't mean they are aggressive. As I said, all blades are sharp and designed to cut. ---> http://theshaveden.com/forums/threa...ild-sharp-or-smooth-a-general-overview.37813/
Now you've done it! One razor won't be enough! Great start, have fun! And remember...you will cut yourself, its inevitable.
Congrats on getting your first DE razor. I am sure that many more will follow. Please keep us posted on how the shaves go.
to TSD "PanHead" I hope you enjoy it here. on your first safety razor purchase! You've taken your first step towards shaving nirvana. It makes no difference, start with whichever blade you want. The only way to know for an ABSOLUTE fact if a blade is mild or aggressive to your face is to try it yourself, not from the reviews of other shavers. That's why a blade sampler pack is so important, so you can try a variety of blades and pick the best blade/blades for your face and technique. Just practice good preshave, shave and postshave technique and you will be fine. Check out GDCarrington's 30 day rule.
I gave one of those razors to my Brother, and he liked it, He is still shaving with it, if he sticks with it (wet shaving) I will give him the razor it is based on. As I have a couple of extra Gillette Super Speed Flair tips I am not using. I just need to send em' to the Captain first. I hope you enjoy that razor as much as he seems to.
