pumpkin with a glass of fresh cider. with devinshire cream. with vanilla ice cream. with egg nog. .........ahhhh
Pumpkin pie! It's one of my favourite things ever! However I've never had sweet potato pie, so my answer isn't really fair. Is it somewhat comparable? I do love sweet potatoes too...
I grew up eating the requisite pumpkin pie during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. Once I was out on my own and discovered roasting sweet potatoes in the oven... bringing out their inherent sweet, gooey meat I have never looked back. The pie of choice here is my Caramel Apple Pie, but Sweet Potato Pie (either Jeff's or mine) is a close second.
This conversation got me wondering about making a pie with candies yams in it. So, I did. I have to say Candied Yam Pie beats them all! Pie crust and crispy marshmallows.
Pumpkin pie is awesome, sweet potato pie is great. Sweet potato casserole is awesome, too....however, hold the marshmallows, I prefer the recipe that calls for pecans/other nuts. I grew up with that recipe, and the first time I tried (or ever saw, for that matter) SP casserole with marshmallows was at my wife's grandmothers house for Thanksgiving a few years ago...it looked really good, tasted pretty good, but not near as good as the one with nuts. I guess a bit of primacy effect going there maybe. But, I'll take one of each, please
That's sounds like my Mom's casserole recipe. It's got butter, brown sugar, pecans and I'm not sure if there's anything else in it but man it's tasty and fattening. Give me turkey, stuffing, sweet potato casserole and a piece of pumpkin pie with cool whip and I'm good to go, as I don't need anything else, except for a piece of sweet potato pie with the cool whip a few hours later. A side of cranberry sauce won't hurt either.
Maybe it's a Southern thing...then again, marshmallows sound kinda southern, too. Maybe it's a Cajun thing, it's my great-aunt's recipe, exactly as you described your mom's. Man, I'm drooling for next week!
yeah, that was my thought too. it was very sweet (too sweet), but I've passed on it there ever since. It wasn't bad, I just prefer without. At least I now know I'm not the only one
*sigh* I am the only person in my household that wants either sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie. Such picky eaters.....
I thought that was one of the ten commandments,"Thou shalt consume pumpkin and sweet tater pie with gusto".
No need to be rude. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Some do. It's your pie. Enjoy it your way.
